Farm and cottage receiving rentals

The collection comprises the following: (i) Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents, comprising property in p's Oswestry, Bishop's Castle (from RC11 onwards), Shropshire, Llangedwyn, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llansilin, co. Denb., Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant, co. Mont., and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, cos Mont. and Denb. The Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents collected between 1898 and 1910 (RC35-RC47) are not contained in the volumes described below, but rather, are contained in separate volumes (see series entitled Llangedwyn Estate Rents). In 1911 (RC48), when this collection re-appears in the volumes described below, properties in the following parishes have been added: Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl and Llandegla, co. Denb., Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint, and Tilston, Cheshire. Flint (RC18 onwards); also included are details concerning interest on road bonds for the second (RC18-RC23) and fourth division (RC18-RC27) of Montgomeryshire roads, and the Dolgellau, Mawddwy and Towyn Turnpike Trust (RC18-RC22). Property in p. Llanbadarn Fawr, co. Card., is added in 1866 (RC3), in p. Pennal, co. Mer., in 1879 (RC16), and in p. Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, co. Card., in 1900 (RC37). Property in p. Llanwnnog omitted after 1873 (RC10). Rents for sporting in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli are included with the Cyfeiliog rental from 1876 (RC13), having been in the Glan-llyn rental in RC11-12. Encroachments in p. Llandinam are contained from 1878 (RC15). (v) Glan-llyn rents, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanycil (including the town of Bala), Llanuwchllyn (including charity lands), Llangywer and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer. The Glan-llyn rents are included from 1867 (RC4). Details of boats on Bala Lake are contained from 1874 (RC11), as are rents for sporting in p. Trawsfynydd. (vi) Mine rents and royalties, including mines in cos Mont. and Denb. and Shropshire (the mines are named but not the parishes in which they are situated. These rents are included from 1879 (RC16). No mines in Shropshire are contained after RC34 (except for RC46 and RC47). No mines in co. Mer. after appear RC45 (except for RC62). Farm and cottage rents as described above will also be found in the series of general rentals (Farm and Cottage Rents, 1863-98). With regard to the dates in this series, the year given will represent the last date when the rents were due (be it Lady Day or Michaelmas or any other date). For example, RC3 contains rents collected at Michaelmas 1865 and Lady Day 1866, but the date given is 1866. Mine rents and royalties, in particular, were collected at various times throughout the year. The volumes for 1884 and 1920-1924 are not at NLW. The numbers RC21 and RC57-61 have been provided in case NLW should acquire them at some future date.

The collection comprises property in p. Until 1885 (R140/1a), the rentals below are arranged according to whether the estates were held in fee simple, tail male or tail general, whereas the properties in the separate series of Farm and cottage receiving rentals are arranged according to the more familiar pattern of estates (Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents, Wynnstay and Ruthin rents, Llwydiarth rents, Cyfeiliog/Llanbryn-mair rents, Glan-llyn rents). Financial and other private papers resulting from the recovery of debts, estate administration, personal expenditure, legal disputes, and parish and county administration, belonging to Edward Williams [of Castell], 1592-1598; Gruffith and Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed, 1620-1668; Sir William Williams of Glascoed, 1660-1701; Edward Lloyd of Llanforda, 1665-1678; and Thomas Lloyd of Berriw, 1672-1675; also a solicitor’s accounts of general charges and disbursements, 1903.

Fishing and shooting papers

Papers relating to sporting on lands belonging to Wynnstay, namely unlawful fishing in the river Tanat and in the Dovery fishery within the manor of Cyfeiliog, and agreements for shooting at Llangollen and on the Llwydiarth estate, 1877-1928.

Title deeds relating to properties in the parish of Garthbeibio, filed as miscellaneous properties, 1550-1663; Hafod Morgan, alias Y Braich Gole, 1590-1644; Tythin Gwillim ap Ieuan ap Eingion, Tyddin Maes Geddinog and Llyest y Glane Duon, 1620-1637; and Garthbeibio leases, 1672-1734.

General bills and receipts,

General bills and receipts, comprising clothing bills 1639-1675, followed by files of bills, receipts and occasional correspondence kept by Samuel Sidebotham resulting from the routine domestic management, landscaping and extravagant personal expenditure of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 4th Baronet. Recurrent expenses include travelling and accommodation, labour, taxes, insurance, ground rent and public services in London, works of art, fabrics, foodstuffs, drink, clothing, jewellery, silver plate, furnishings, books, plays, and susbcriptions to charities and clubs. Another file concerns exclusively the renovations of the town house in St James’s Square. The contents reflect the baronet’s indulgence of his cultural interests at Wynnstay and in London, and include bills from high-quality artists, craftsmen, musicians and London tradesmen. The files are as follows: clothing bills, 1639-1675; bills and receipts (personal, household, estate), 1746, 1770-1783; bill of Rysbrack the sculptor, 1751; bills and receipts (personal, household, estate), 1769-1782; bills and receipts for arts and architecture, 1770-1775; bills and receipts (personal, household, estate), 1770-1782; bills and receipts (coming of age, household and estate), 1770-1782; bills and receipts (personal, household, estate), 1770-1789; bills, receipts and accounts (tour of North Wales), 1771; bills, receipts, etc. (renovations at 20, St James’s Square, London), 1771-1783; apothecary’s account, 1778; and bills for park labourers, 1779-1780.

Glan-llyn estate

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (d. 1749) acquired the Glan-llyn estate with the Llwydiarth estate. The estate comprised property in p's Llanuwchllyn (t's Penaran, Cynllwyd, Pennant-lliw, Tre Castell), Llanycil (Bala Town, t. Streflyn), Llangywer, Llanfor, Llandderfel and Corwen, all co. Mer. From R26/6 (1741?), property in [p. Llanuwchllyn] (Caergai) is added, and between 1744 and 1748 (R27/9-R29/6) and in 1750 (R30/5) the chief rents of the manor of Pennant-lliw are also included. Collectors: David Morgan, 1626, John Evans, 1701-1706 and 1714-1728, Randle Jones, 1736-1751, and Thomas Jones 1752-1772. After 1772, this collection continues in Collection I.

Glan-llyn estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llandderfel, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (including t. Branas), Llanfor, Gwyddelwern, Bettws Gwerfil-Goch, Llanfihangel y Traethau, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llanymawddwy, Mallwyd (transferred to the Cyfeiliog estate), Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfrothen and Llanfachreth, all in co. Mer., and in p's Penmachno, Clynnog and Llanbeblig (including properties in Caernarfon), co. Caern. This collection also contains the chief rents for some of the above parishes, including Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llanfachreth, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel, Llanbeblig and Trawsfynydd; also, a statement of account of almshouses in Llanuwchllyn, R79-R121; election expenses in co. Mont. (1830s); and details of boats (and their owners) on Bala Lake; R83/7e (1828) contains a rental of estates had in exchange from Viscount Clive, consisting of property in p's Llanerfyl, Llangadfan and Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont. By 1861, some of the above-named places have been gradually omitted from this collection, and only the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llandderfel, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfor, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau; and from R118/2 to R135/1i chief rents are contained for the following parishes in co. Mer. only: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangower, Llanycil, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau. Mer., while R122/1h (1867) contains chief rents as specified above; R123/1g (1867) and all succeeding volumes contain the chief rents only, while the other rents of the Glan-llyn estate have been transferred (see R123/1a) to the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. By R135/1i (1879), only the chief rents for the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Llanycil and Llandrillo. Glascoed and Llanforda estates

The Glascoed estate was acquired by Sir William Williams (d. 1700) through his marriage with Margaret, daughter and coheiress of Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed, and the Llanforda estate was purchased by Sir William from Edward Lloyd of Llanforda in 1676. They comprise property in p's Llansilin (t's Moelfre, Bodlith, Priddbwll, Lloran, Sycharth, Lledrod, Estynallan, Rhiwlas), Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, [Llangadwaladr] (t. Tregeiriog), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Henfachau, Prys Fechan), [Glyntraean formerly part of Llangollen] (t's Grogeniddon, Hafodgynfor), [Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog] (t. Llywarch), [Llangollen] (t. Dinbren), [Ruabon] (t. Cristionydd Fechan), Llanynys and Derwen, all co. Denb. The following property has been added at various times:. Glascoed, Llanforda and Plas-y-ward estates A

From 1716 onwards the combined collections of Glascoed, Llanforda, and Plas-y-ward are divided into two, A and B. Collection A comprises property in co. From 1739 (R 24/15) the collection is divided into three: B1: property in cos Denb. and Mont., and p. Llanymawddwy (t. Cywarch), co. Mer. B2: property in co. Mer. except p. Llanymawddwy (t. Cywarch). B3: property in co. Caern. Division B was re-organised in 1772 as follows: property in co. Denb., in Collection IV; property in co. Mer. in collection I; property in co. Mont. in Collections I and III; and property in co. Caern., in Collection V.

Glasinfryn and Gwydir estates

The Glasinfryn estate comprised property in p's Llanfechell and [Llangwyllog] (hamlet of Tresgawen), co. Ang, and in p's Conwy (t. Y Gyffin), Treflys, Pwllheli, Clynnog and Llanberis, co. Caern. R8/1 (1678) and R8/6 (1680) contain the Glasinfryn estate only. From 1683 (L1301) it is combined with property which formed part of the Gwydir estate, in p's [Waunfawr formerly Llanbeblig] (t. Treflan), Llanfair-is-gaer, Llandeiniolen, Llanrug and Bangor, and Caernarfon town, all co. Caern, p. Llysfaen in co. Denb., and p. Llanfrothen in co. Mer. From 1691 (R8/9) property in [p. Conway] (t. Y Gyffin) purchased from William Robinson, esq. is added. From 1684 (L1301) to 1737 (R24/6) one property in Ruthin is added. From 1697 (R9/6a) property in co. Ang. is omitted. In 1741 (R26/1) p. Llanfrothen is transferred to the manor of Valle Crucis collection.
