1952 and 1966 Deposits

Llwyn estate records, mainly title deeds and abstracts of title, 1623-1932, together with a few business letters, plans, printed sale catalogues and rentals, 1855-1908, relating to properties principally in Llanfyllin (including the manor of Brithdir) and elsewhere in Montgomeryshire, and to a lesser extent in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire.

Pitchford estate records (also known as the 'Pitchford MSS')

This catalogue of Pitchford estate records (also known as the 'Pitchford MSS') was prepared by the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 1963, when the records were still housed at Pitchford. In 1983 the National Library of Wales purchased all the items offered for sale by C.R.A. Grant and the owners of the estate. However, not all the papers listed by HMC in 1964 were in fact offered for sale. Nos 2-12 are now held in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, Kings College London; they comprise military correspondence, 1805-1903, and military miscellanea, 1811-[post-1945]; the Liddell Hart Centre's online description of them is on AIM25, <www.aim25.ac.uk>. Nos 108, 111, 125, 127, 242 and 244 are also marked "Not in NLW" in the paper schedule, and Nos 143-156, 261-265, 270-271, 276, 303, 322-324, 359, 382, 386, 415-424 451, 461, 464-465 and 546-552 are marked "Not on [or in] Sale to NLW"; Nos 23, 31, 72, 113, 204 and 317 appear to be cross-references; No. 74 was not used; and No. 502 appears to be the dorse of 501, in which case both numbers refer to a single item.

David Davies: General and Political Correspondence,

Comprises letters to David Davies, from 1932 the first Baron Davies of Llandinam, 1901-44, mainly on domestic political matters and international issues. Some of the early letters are from David Davies while he travelled extensively abroad, 1901-05. From 1932 onwards some concern the affairs and the running of the New Commonwealth Society set up by Davies himself in that year, mainly the proceedings of its British Section. Some letters also relate to Davies's researches and many publications in the form of monographs and journal articles. There are also references to the role and activities of the League of Nations Union and to the publication of the periodical the Welsh Outlook. There are also significant files of copies of letters sent out by Davies's various secretaries on a wide range of subjects. The group also comprises correspondence and papers, 1916-43, relating mainly to the Montgomeryshire County Liberal Association and political life within the county, including the circumstances leading to David Davies resolving to retire from parliament in 1926-1927. There are also some interesting memoranda, 1918-44, deriving from the Liberal Party nationally during a crucial period in its history. There is also correspondence and papers, 1945-50, concerning E. H. Garner-Evans MP.

Letters from Rhodri Morgan

A collection of 90 letters and one postcard from Rhodri Morgan sent to his family while he was studying at Harvard University. Thanks to a scholarship provided by the Thomas and Elizabeth Williams (Loughor School Board) Fund, Rhodri Morgan was able to study and travel in the USA between 1961 and 1963. Most of the letters were sent from Harvard University, but many were sent from various locations across the USA while Rhodri Morgan was on vacation, studying or working. In the letters he discusses university life, his studies, his budget, his developing political interests and notes various friends and experiences which shaped his political outlook. Prys Morgan's detailed notes on many of these contacts are contained in file 25.
