A volume of transcripts of miscellaneous poems in English, Latin, and Welsh. The Welsh verse consists of one 'cywydd' each by Davydd Nanmor, Gr[uffydd] ap Ieuan, Iolo Goch, Ll[ewely]n ap Holl ap Ieuan ap Gronwy, and Mredydd ap Rys, and some thirty 'englynion', all anonymous except one which is attributed to Gruffith Llwyd. To the tune of Bonny Nell', and 'On Doctor Corbets sermon before the King'. The volume appears to have been compiled in the mid and late seventeenth century. As marginalia or on blank pages, etc., and generally in a later hand than the text of the poems, are various inscribed names (see note below) and memoranda, including a copy of a note signed by Edward David, Evenechtyd.

A commonplace book containing prescriptions (mainly for ailments suffered by horses), recipes, accounts of wages received [?by a hired servant at Hafodunos], 1776-1805, a list of 'Mares coverd By Druggist in [17]87', and a few other miscellaneous memoranda.

A programme announcing horse races to be run at Mold on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 22, 23, and 24 September 1800, a public breakfast to be given by the corporation of Mold at the Black Boy Tavern on Thursday, 26 [September] [there is a discrepancy here between the date and the day], a grand miscellaneous concert to be held immediately after the breakfast, and 'The Annual Election of the Mayor, Sheriffs, etc.' to be held on the evening of the same day. The programme had been forwarded to 'Miss Clough at Holland Griffiths, Esqr., Carregllwyd, Anglesea'.

A register [compiled by the Reverend Thomas Rowlands, vicar choral of the cathedral church of St. Asaph, [ ]-1683, and comportioner of Llansannan, 1683-?1696] in which are recorded marriages, christenings, and burials which took place within the parish of St. Asaph, and also those of inhabitants of the said parish which took place elsewhere, 1595-1653. Amongst the burials recorded are those of John Tuder of Wickwer ['Sion Tudur', the poet], 5 April 1602, and of three bishops of the diocese of St. Asaph, viz. W[illia]m Morgan, 11 September 1604, Richard [Parry], 28 September 1623, and John Hammer, 24 July 1629. On a blank end paper inserted when the volume was bound is a note stating that 'This Diary of Peter Roberts formerly belonging to my great uncle John Lloyd of Wygfair and Hafodunos [1749-1815, 'The Philosopher'] was rebound by Richard Henry Howard of Wygfair A.D. 1878'. The writer of this note appears to have been under the impression that the present volume was the original manuscript of the chronicle or memoranda book compiled by Peter Roberts, notary public at St. Asaph, for the period ?1595-1646, and known as 'Y Cwtta Cyfarwydd'. The present manuscript, however, is a different work, although a comparison of the two would seem to suggest that Thomas Rowlands's compilation was based upon that of Peter Roberts, with alterations in the order of entries, omissions, etc., for the period up to 1646, and additional entries for the years 1647-1653.

A rent roll headed 'Anno 1686 A Rent Rolle of yt p[ar]t of ye Mannour of Mould that belongs to John Langley, Esqr., L[or]d of ye s[ai]d Mannour, for ye year 1686, wherein is Included all ye Rents reserved upon Leases & alsoe from Ten[an]ts upon ye full rent And for all Chiefe, Charter & Burgage Rents due and payable for ye Same year 86 . . .'; together with a statement of accounts relating to the said manor for the four years 1686-1689, as drawn up 23 January 1689/90 by Tho[mas] Williams.

A miscellaneous rental and account book containing entries for the period 1675-1707, originally the book of Hedd Lloyd [of Hafodunos]. The contents include 'A rent roll of the lands & possessions of Hedd Lloyd, Esqr. in the parish of llangernew & elsewhere in the county of Denbigh taken this 17th day of September 1675 . . .' referring to lands in the parish of Llangernew, the tithe of the parsonage of Llangernew, lands in Trovarth, and certain fee farm rents; 'A particular of the names of the seuerall closes or parcells of lands in cluded in the demesne of Havodvnnos together with the Rent they have bin sett att . . .' [1675]; accounts of rents received in May and at Michaelmas [16]77-1696, of presents received [ 16]77-1696, and of fee farm rents received 1680-1707 [? all in respect of the Hafodunos estate]; entries relating to tithes [?of the parish of Llangernew] and other financial items during the period [16]78-1706/7; and a copy of a warrant, dated 1677, directed to the collectors of the taxes assessed in the parish of Llangernew for levying the taxes then due.

A volume containing a rental for the year 1661 of the demesne of Hauodynnos, and of lands in Llansanan [co. Denbigh] held by virtue of a lease granted by Mr. Rob[er]t Wynne of Dyffryn Aled to Mr. Henry Lloyd of Hauod ynnos, deceased; an account of rents received in respect of the demesne of Hauod ynnos and of lands in Llansanan aforesaid, and of rents received from Hauod ynnos tenants, May and Michaelmas 1661; accounts of money received [? from the sale of] horses, cattle, sheep, crops, etc., and of presents received, 1661; and a summary of accounts [? in respect of the Hafodunos estate] for the period 6 November 1661 to 9 May 1662 by Dauid Lewis.

A rental of rents [due to the Crown] in the counties of Anglesey, Carnarvon, Chester, Denbigh, Flint, Merioneth, and Montgomery in 1781, with [the auditor's] remarks. At the beginning of the volume is a list headed 'List of North Wales Debentures', being an account of sums payable in fees and otherwise to Crown officials (such as the baron of Carnarvon exchequer, the sheriffs of the six counties, the constables of Beaumaris, Carnarvon, Conway, Harleigh and Flint castles, the chief forester of Snowdon, etc.,) and to other persons in North Wales.

A rental of the estate [? of Robert Howard of Conway, in the town and vicinity of Conway], 1745-1752, and an account of rents received in respect thereof, 1745-1753.

Accounts relating to the sale of [Wigfair and Hafodunos] timber and estates at St. Asaph and Mold in April, June, and August 1817, and to sales of timber at Wygfair and Hafodunos in February 1818; and a copy of the Rev[eren]d Richard Howard's account 'with the Hafodunos and Wygfair sales', 1818-1821.

A copy of the sale catalogue of the library and scientific apparatus of John Lloyd of Wigfair ['The Philosopher'], entitled Bibliotheca Llwydiana. A Catalogue of the entire library (near ten thousand volumes) from the presses of Caxton, Wynhyn de Worde, Pynson, etc., and philosophical apparatus, late the property of John Lloyd, esq., LL.D., deceased . . . which will be sold by auction, without reserve, at his seat at Wygfair near St. Asaph, Denbighshire, on Monday, January 15th, 1816, and twelve following days . . . by Mr. Broster of Chester . . ., being an interleaved copy with manuscript entries recording the amount for which each item was sold.

A copy of a sale catalogue entitled A Catalogue of the houshold furniture and other valuable effects of Edw[ard] Thelwall, esq., at his seat at Llanbedr-hall near Ruthin, Denbighshire, which will be sold by auction by Mr. Tho[mas] Powell (on the premises) on Tuesday the 6th of June 1786 and the two following days. Opposite some of the items listed are pencilled manuscript entries indicating ?the prices obtained.

A collection of ten English and nine Welsh sermons preached at Caerwys, Derwen, Efenechtyd, Flint, Halkin, Llanfwrog, Llanrhydd, Llanverres, Merbery, Mold, Nerquis, Northop, Ruthin, and Trythyn, 1709-1773.

Genealogical and biographical data relating to the Clough family of Plas Clough, co. Denbigh, and related families, including notes on Richard Clough [Elizabethan merchant, ob. 1570] extracted from Fuller's Worthies, with additional notes on his death, the burial of his heart and hand at Denbigh, and his coat of arms; a 'Pedigree of Clough of Lleweny Green in Com. Denbigh' stated to be 'From Harl[eian] Mss. folio 1971 entitled North Wales Pedigrees collected by Randles Holmes. Page 95 and continued by A. B. Clough', tracing the descent of the senior branch of the Cloughs of Plas Clough from Richard Clough of Denbigh [temp. Henry VIII] to the mid nineteenth century, and their connections with the families of Foulkes of Eriviatt, Lloyd of Havodunos, etc.; a pedigree chart showing the 'Descent of the Cloughs from the Powells of Glanywern [co. Denbigh] and their consequent half blood Relations'; a copy of an inscription on a tombstone in the parish church of Llandyrnog, co. Denbigh, commemorating the burial of Henry Powell of Glanywern aforesaid in 1672, and of his wife Elizabeth in 1691[/2]; and extracts from the parish register of Llandyrnog recording the birth of the seventeen children of the said Henry and Elizabeth Powell.

Correspondence and miscellaneous documents relating to the honour of Pickering, being parcel of the duchy of Lancaster in the county of York. The miscellaneous items include a report, 21 April 1696, by S[ ] Travers, supervisor gen[eral], on the value of the honour of Pickering, the manors of Pickering and Scaulby, the site of the old ruined castle, Blansby Park, and other demesne lands belonging to the said honour and manors (copy); a royal warrant, 23 April 1697, authorising the grant of a lease of the honour and manors of Pickering, the manor of Scalby, etc., to Abell Tassin D'Allonne (copy); 'A Coppy of the particulars of ye L[or]ds[hi]p of Pickering, Scalby & Blunsby Park . . .' [18th cent.]; particulars relating to a lease of the castle and manor of Pickering, the park of Blandesby, the manor or lordship of Scalby, etc., granted by the king, under the seal of the duchy of Lancaster, 18 May 1697, to Abel Tassin D'Allonne; questions in a case relating to the aforementioned lease; and an affidavit sworn by William Stockdale at Scarborough, 27 April 1710, concerning the refusal of George Watson of Old Malton, co. York, and John Watson [his son], steward and bailiff respectively of the honour of Pickering, to surrender the said offices to Lovell Lazenby of Scarbrough and to him the said William Stockdale, acting on behalf of John Edwards of Chelsea, co. Midlesex (copy). The correspondence includes letters from [Abell Tassin] D'Allonne from Hague, to Edw[ar]d Lloyd at his house in Kensington near London, 1706 (negotiations for the assignment of a grant), Lovell Lazenby from Scarbrough, to Edward Lloyd at the Stamp Office, Lincoln's Inn, London, 1709-1711 (9) (the title to the offices of steward and bailiff of the honour of Pickering, an offer to the writer to receive a deputation of the said offices, and opposition from Geo[rge] Watson and his son John who claimed the offices for themselves), Edw[ard] Lloyd to [Lovell Lazenby], 1709 (the deputation mentioned in the previous letters and means of combating possible opposition from Mr. Watson) (copy), Will[iam] Tailer to [Mr. D'Allonne], 1696 (2) (the value of the rents of the honour of Pickering and of the castle, demesnes, and Blansby Park belonging to the said honour) (copies), and [ ] to Lovell Lazenby at Scarborough, 1709- 1710 and undated (5) (questions relating to the offices of steward and bailiff of the honour of Pickering) (draft copies).

A certificate of insurance, 8 February 1830, in respect of the ship Five Sisters proceeding from Conway to Swansea with a cargo of copper ore from the Llandudno new mine. Attached is a letter from [Messrs.] Morgan and Preece, Bank, Carnarvon, to Mr. Thomas Jones, agent, New Mining Co., Llandudno, Conway, 10 February 1830, relating to the said certificate. 12512E Bundles of vouchers and receipts in respect of salaries, wages, stores, repair work, etc., at the Llandudno New Mine Company's works, 1821- 1831.

A narrative compiled ?circa 1730 and entitled 'Some Part of the Sufferings of John Wynne of Leeswood, Esqr. of the Parish of Mold in the County of Flint, Humbly Presented to the Consideration of their most Gracious Majesties the King and Queen, the Prince of Wales, their Majesties most Honourable Privy Council, the Lords spiritual and Temporal, and to the Consideration of all Magistrates, Clergy and Gentry and in more Particular manner to those of the Counties of Flint and Mountgomery, in both which he has very wrongfully suffered most tedious Imprisonments', in which the said John Wynne recounts what he had allegedly suffered through the imprisonment, vilification, poverty, etc., which he had experienced as a result of the efforts of his family, and more particularly of his son [Sir] George [Wynne, 1st bart. of Leeswood aforesaid], to deprive him of his estate, including a valuable [lead] mine [at Halkin in the county of Flint], which had been the subject of litigation between the parties; also a copy of a letter sent by the said John Wynne to his son [Sir George], 30 January 1731, in which he addresses him as 'You Graceless, Rebellious, Villain', and denounces him for his conduct with frequent quotations from Scripture to reinforce his denunciations.

A notebook containing the results of readings made with a theodolite from various points in North Wales including Clogwyn y Garnedd, Carn Cwn [sic] Gafr, the tower of the cathedral church at St. Asaph, Moelfra Ucha and Moelfodiar, 1778-1793; measurements, from stage to stage, of the distances between Mold and Denbigh (by six different routes), Mold and Chester, Denbigh and Northop, Denbigh and St. Asaph (by two different routes), St. Asaph and Rudland, Rhydland and Vorryd, Denbigh Cross and Tal y Cafn (by two different routes), Denbigh Cross and Conway, and Wrexham and Ruthyn; a list of 'the Stations and the Principal objects made use of in the prosecution of the Survey of North Wales and a part of the adjoining Counties'; and a 'Catalog of Books at Wickwer' containing the titles, etc., of forty-one works published between 1480 and 1639.

A 'Tyth Book of the Parish of Llangernew' [co. Denbigh] for the period 1749-1769. The entries on each page are entered in columns headed-No. of Lambs; Persons' Names; Duties; Lambs had; Paid by them; Paid by us; Account; Wool; Lactuals; Colts; and Arrears.

An English verse translation of Euripides's satyric drama The Cyclops, with the dates 9 Apr[il] 1782 and 26 Apr[il] 1782 inserted at the beginning and end of the text respectively; and an incomplete translation into English of Longinus's treatise on the sublime, the latter part of the penultimate section (No. 43) and the whole of the final section (No. 44) being missing. Both works are probably by and in the hand of the Rev. Robert Potter.
