Personal correspondence and papers of John, second marquis of Bute,

Letters mainly to John, Lord Dumfries, and, from 1814 second marquis of Bute, mainly from family, friends and political and ecclesiastical figures, letters relating to the management of family accounts and annuities, and letters relating to his English estates, including interests at Banbury and Wroxton, both in Oxfordshire, and at Luton, Bedfordshire. Originally bundled as 'Miscellaneous', the correspondence also includes petitions for assistance and applications for subscriptions, often including printed enclosures.

Correspondence re. the guardianship of the children of Lord Henry Stuart, dec,

Records and letters relating to the guardianship of Henry, William, Charles and Gertrude Stuart, orphans of the late Lord Henry Stuart [the fifth son of John, first marquis of Bute] (d. 1809) and Lady Gertrude-Amelia Stuart his wife (d. 1809), and of Henry Stuart and his sister [?Elizabeth], [children of ?Lord George Stuart,] under the guardianship of the Marquis of Bute and Lord Hertford.

North estate correspondence,

Letters relating to the estates of the North family in which John, marquis of Bute, had a life interest by virtue of his first wife, Maria, daughter and co-heiress of George North, earl of Guilford. Her share of her father's property comprised the 2,945 acre Kirtling estate in Cambridgeshire and the 350 acre Harlow estate in Essex. Maria died childless in 1841, and the estates reverted to the North family on the death of the Marquis of Bute in 1848.

Luton estate correspondece,

Letters relating to the Luton estate and Bedfordshire interests of John, marquis of Bute, as lord of the manor of Luton and Lord Paramount of the Hundred of Flitt.

Manorial leases and agreements,

These leases, originally in the Bute tin boxes numbers 32-4, are for a variety of terms: lives, terms of years, and latterly yearly, and also include a large number of agreements to take leases. The bundles were organized by man. or groups of man's, and formerly contained a number of copies of court roll, which have been transferred to Class M, manorial records. A number of the remaining deeds may well relate to properties that had once been copyhold. A number also relate to properties represented by bundles in the main series of deeds, e.g. Cathays and Plas Turton in Cardiff. A number of man's are unrepresented, eg, Llyswyrny, Peterston and St Fagans, and Ogmore and Spittle, among others, appear to be under-represented.

Cardiff deeds (exchanges),

Deeds And Documents relating to properties acquired by the Marquis of Bute by exchanges. Although kept by the estate solicitors as a separate class of 'Cardiff deeds (exchanges)' in Bute tin box number 35, and relating mainly to the Cardiff area, they also contain deeds for p's Ystradyfodwg and Pen-tyrch and other places. A small number of deeds relating to exchanges have been added to this class.
