Almanacs,

Seven printed almanacs formerly belonging to Iolo Morganwg. They consist of Trusler's Country Almanack for 1794, and Moore's Almanack Improved for 1814, 1815, 1816, 1821, 1822 and 1826. There are a few annotations by Iolo Morganwg here and there.

Poems by Margaret Williams,

Three notebooks containing poems by Margaret (Peggy) Williams, daughter of Iolo Morganwg. One poem is entitled 'on my Father who died Decbr 17 [recte 18] 1826'. At the beginning of one notebook are some memoranda concerning phenomena observed in the sky, Dec. 1830-Oct. 1834.

Notes on grammar,

A notebook in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg containing grammatical notes. Inside the pocket of the front cover is written 'Grammatical Collections. Welsh.' It also contains a list of 'Beirdd Eisteddfod y Bewpyr, cyn belled (medd ef) ag y gallodd Mr Sion Bradford eu cael allan o gaffadwriaethau Watkin Powel o Ben y Fai', &c.

Memorandum-books,

Two memorandum-books or notebooks which belonged to Iolo Morganwg. The earlier of the two, marked 'Memoranda Hints. &c. 1805', contains triads, proverbs, 'englynion' and other verses, music, particulars of the contents of 'Ancient Historical Documents relating to Wales and the Welsh Nation', a work in two volumes 'To be published by E. Wms in 1807', various Welsh words with their meanings, a list of printed collections of Welsh poetry, including hymns, notes on versification, and a list of 'Traits in the Southwalian from the Troubadorian Poetry', etc. The other which has fewer entries contains, among other things, a note headed 'Ofergoelion am y Tylwyth Teg ym Morganwg', a list of Copper Smoke Subscribers and Judges, a few recipes, and a series of 'Pennillion Diarhebgoel' by Iolo Morganwg.

Awdlau ar Y Dydd Byrraf,

Papers in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg and Taliesin ab Iolo, 1823-1824, relating to the controversy which arose concerning the 'awdlau' of 'Sion yr Almanacwr' [Richard Jones, Merthyr] and 'Rhywun' [Taliesin Williams] on 'Y Dydd Byrraf'. There are copies of both 'awdlau' and drafts or copies of letters to David Saunders, etc. (see also Awen Merthyr Tydfil ... Pump o Awdlau ar y Dydd Byrraf: Testun Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion a Phrydyddion Merthyr Tydfil, yn Morganwg, Dros y flwyddyn 1822 (Merthyr Tydfil, n.d.), and Seren Gomer (1824), pp. 87-8, 170-72, and 368-9).

Carchariad Tomos Glyn Cothi,

Papers, mainly in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg, relating to the case of the Rev. Thomas Evans (Tomos Glyn Cothi), who was imprisoned in 1801 for sedition (16 items). Some of these papers have been described by Prof. G. J. Williams in Llên Cymru, 3 (1954-6), 120-122.

Memorandum books,

Two memorandum-books, sewn together, containing entries by Iolo Morganwg, [c. 1780]-[c. 1789]. The contents include pedigrees, a draft petition concerning the living of Cheriton, vacant by the death of Mr Williams, on behalf of an unnamed person with a wife and five children who recommends himself 'only as a poor prisoner that has been long detained in the comfortless walls of a Jail by a merciless creditor', accounts, a 'Cynghor Brithodl' attributed to Llywelyn ab Hywel beginning 'Clyw fy nghyngor a gwna doraeth', lines beginning, 'Porthwr moch clywch bawb ei ochain' attributed to Charls ? Daf .... Maredydd, two stanzas beginning 'Clywch bawb ar alarnad a chaniad achwynion' (all crossed out), agricultural queries, some Gwent and Glamorganshire words with their meanings, and a copy of the inscription contained in MS 128/5 [NLW MS 21418E].

Triads and Bardic Institutes,

(a) A notebook (8 pp., in Welsh) containing 'Trioedd y Lladron', twelve in number, 'o Lyfr Thomas Philip o Dreos', in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg, followed by 'Credo Wladwriaethol' written in another hand; (b) The Bardic Institutes in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg (in English): (i) '[The] Bardic Institution according to [the] Laws of Gruffydd ab Cynan'. A note at the end states that this is an abstract of the Institutes as given by Dr John David Rhys in his Welsh Grammar, 1593; (ii) 'The Bardic Institutes as Traditionally retained down to the Present Day, by the Glemorganshire Bards who assert, and believe that they are unalteredly the same with those of the Ancient British Bards and Druids'.

Llwyd Hir,

A notebook marked (?by Taliesin Williams) 'Llwyd Hir'. On the cover EW has written 'Geiriau Cymreig cymmysgedig' and 'Examine this for the History of the Bards. Many things of Great Importance'. There are also four loose sheets which are similar in form and content, and which may have belonged to this manuscript. See note inside front cover concerning ink and pencil crossings.

Health & husbandry and Saints' Days,

A notebook in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg containing: (a) Instructions (touching health and husbandry) for the twelve months of the year. 'Y Mae'r ail ddalen yn Mis Rhagfyr ar goll. Iolo Morganwg'; (b) A Calendar of Saints' Days (see also Iolo Manuscripts, Second edition, 1888, p. 152). On the first page before a, is the following note: 'Allan o hen Galander mewn ysgriflyfr a ysgrifenwyd ynghylch 1500, ym meddiant Mr Thomas Davies o Ddolgelleu'; (c) More instructions, but for Jan.-March only. 'O Hen galander a wnaethpwyd yn y flwyddyn 1442 y tynnwyd y gyfarwyddyn yma. (ebe Llyfr John Wiliam o'r Twtsiwn)'. Inside the front cover are 'englynion' by Edwd Richards [sic], Ystrad Meuryg.

'The Triades of the Island of Britain'..: an English translation made by Iolo Morganwg in 1807 of the series of 126 'Trioedd Ynys Prydain' printed in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales, Vol. II (1801), p. 57 (in the 1870 edition this series occurs at p. 400).

Y Melyn Brith,

A notebook designated 'Y Melin Brith', containing Unitarian Doxologies by Iolo Morganwg, some Unitarian hymns, and Byron's Hebrew or Jewish hymns, etc. The pages are numbered 1-32 and there is an outline of the contents on the cover. There is also another copy of the Byron hymns, with music and some notes on 'Jewish Sacrifices, and Ritual', etc.

Dernyn[n]au Salmau, &c.,

A bundle of loose papers contains hymns, largely crossed out, by Iolo Morganwg. One sheet which Iolo Morganwg has used contains printed Proposals for printing by subscription, the Celtic Remains... By the late Lewis Morris, esq: And augmented By Walter Davies, of All Souls College, Oxford.

Salmau yr Eglwys yn yr Anialwch, Cyfrol II,

'Salmau yr Eglwys yn yr Anialwch (Cyfrol II)...'. In the note, dated 7 August 1826, in NLW MS 21339A Iolo Morganwg refers to this volume thus: 'Gweler ym mhrifddarpar yr ail gyfrol 74' [i.e. Salmau]. The collection is similar to, but not identical with, the first pages of the second volume published by Taliesin Williams in 1834: there are some hymns in the MS which are not in the printed volume, and vice versa. There is also a draft of the beginning of a preface (to be found elsewhere).
