Adjudications

The series comprises papers, mostly manuscript and typescript adjudications by Glyn Jones, of various, mainly literary, competitions, 1945-1988 (with numerous gaps). A number of adjudications are for competitions at school and chapel eisteddfodau, but also include adjudications of the BBC radio short story competition, 1950-1951, with letters from Gwyn Jones (9), Aneirin Talfan (5) and A. G. Prys-Jones; the Arts Council Poetry Award, 1956, which contains letters from Gwyn Jones (5); a competition sponsored by the Welsh Arts Council to translate a poem by Waldo Williams, 1970, with letters from Elan Closs Roberts (4), T. J. Morgan, Gwyn Williams and Waldo Williams (photocopy, 1963); and the Poetry Society Dylan Thomas Award 1984, with a letter from Susan Hill.

Poetry and prose readings

The file comprises papers, [1950]-1990 (with gaps), relating to various poetry and prose readings and performances which include poems by Glyn Jones, and events which he arranged or in which he participated. These include notes for a reading by Glyn Jones which appears to have been delivered during the funeral or memorial service of Gwyn Thomas, 1981; a passage from The valley, the city, the village, [?1987]; and notes for a reading by Glyn Jones on the occasion of Roland Mathias's 75th birthday, 1990. A number of events were presented by, or in association with, the Arts Council of Great Britain Welsh Committee and later the Welsh Arts Council. The file also contains programmes, correspondence and notes, including a draft review of the poetry festival, Poetry at the Mermaid, pertaining to poetry festivals held in England, 1954 and 1961.

Talks and lectures by Glyn Jones

The file contains manuscript and typescript notes of talks and lectures delivered by Glyn Jones, 1938-1989 (with gaps), on various occasions, and includes a report, 1973, on the 'Writers in Schools' scheme. Among the subjects discussed are Glyn Jones and works by him, Anglo-Welsh literature and writers, in particular Dylan Thomas, and D. H. Lawrence. Also included are drafts of the Annual Gwyn Jones Lecture given by Glyn Jones, Random entrances to Gwyn Thomas, which was later published (Cardiff, 1982), and a tribute to John Tripp, 1986. Some talks are accompanied by related notes and letters.

'The story of Llywarch the Old'

The file comprises manuscript drafts, related notes and a copy of the radio script 'The story of Llywarch the Old', translated and reconstructed by Glyn Jones and T. J. Morgan and broadcast in November 1952. The Golden Cockerel Press later published a limited edition of the work entitled The saga of Llywarch the Old (1955). Also included is a letter from Ifor Williams to T. J. Morgan, ?1953.

Jack Jones

The file includes papers, [1950]x1971, 1977, pertaining to Jack Jones. These include drafts of a script, together with related notes, for a television programme about Jack Jones, 1977; notes by Glyn Jones of works by Jack Jones; a draft script, 1963, which appears to be a radio programme about Merthyr, illustrated through extracts of the works of Jack Jones and Glyn Jones (in the latter's hand); and a draft script by Glyn Jones about the life of Jack Jones [1950x1971].

'The Sleeping Bard'

The file comprises copies of the radio script 'The Sleeping Bard. Readings from 'The visions of the sleeping bard' by Ellis Wynne, with commentary by Glyn Jones', broadcast in three parts during May 1952. The scripts contain numerous amendments and some additional manuscript notes. Also included are four letters from Aneirin Talfan Davies regarding the programme, 1952. In addition the file contains a copy of the script 'Cornel y Llenor. "Gweledigaethau'r Bardd Cwsg" gan Elis Wynne', by D. Gwenallt Jones, 1951.

'Gerard Manley Hopkins and Wales'

The file consists of a manuscript draft and radio script of the feature programme 'Gerard Manley Hopkins and Wales', broadcast during September 1951. In addition, the file contains related correspondence, 1951, including letters from Aneirin Talfan Davies (3), and copies of the radio scripts by Aneirin Talfan Davies, 'Y Bardd o Swydd Dorset' and 'William Barnes, the Dorset poet', 1950, which contain references to Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Reviews and reports of books

The file comprises mostly manuscript and typescript drafts, 1952 and [1966]-1991 (with gaps), of reviews by Glyn Jones which appeared in various journals. Also included are evaluation reports of unpublished works, mainly for the Welsh Arts Council. Some of the reviews are accompanied by draft covering letters whilst others are written on papers pertaining to Yr Academi Gymreig.

'The burgomaster's daughter'

The file includes typescript copies, [1952x1965], of the libretto by Glyn Jones for the musical 'The burgomaster's daughter', presented by Glantaf County School.

The Beach of Falesá

The file comprises papers, [1971]-1974, 1976 and 1986-1987, relating to The Beach of Falesá, libretto by Glyn Jones, based on a short story by R. L. Stevenson, and music by Alun Hoddinott. The opera was commissioned by the Welsh National Opera Company and published by the Oxford University Press (London, 1974). The file contains manuscript and typescript drafts of the libretto, with synopses of the work, and a copy of the manuscript vocal score (possibly in the hand of Alun Hoddinott). Also included are manuscript and typescript drafts of lyrics for songs, [c. 1973], together with other related papers. In addition the file contains correspondence, 1973-1974, mostly between Glyn Jones and the Oxford University Press, with letters from Roy Bohana (3), Alun Hoddinott (2), Alan Frank, Oxford University Press (11), and A. G. Prys-Jones. A number of drafts are written on papers pertaining to the Welsh Arts Council and drafts of other works by Glyn Jones.

The series comprises papers, [1952]-1987 (with gaps), including manuscript and typescript drafts, relating to the school musical 'The burgomaster's daughter' and the opera 'The Beach of Falesá', for which Glyn Jones wrote the libretto.

Miscellaneous translations

The file comprises cuttings of the column 'Y Cronicl Cenhadol' in the periodical Y Tyst, 1946-1948, which appear to have been translated into Welsh by Glyn Jones; and a translation into English of the short story 'Pant y Bril', by D. J. Williams, published in Planet, 1971.

A people's poetry. Hen benillion

The file comprises papers, [1974]x1995, relating to A people's poetry: hen benillion, translations by Glyn Jones (Bridgend, 1997). This book was the culmination of many years of translating hen benillion, a collection of which was first formed during the 1970s. The file includes a bound typescript draft of the book, 1995; manuscript and typescript drafts of English translations of hen benillion [1974x1995]; correspondence, 1974-1976, 1978, and 1981-1982, including draft letters by Glyn Jones and a letter from T. H. Parry-Williams, and translations of hen benillion by E. A. Corkett. It appears that some papers pertain to translations of penillion by Glyn Jones published by Gwasg Gregynog, namely When the rose-bush brings forth apples (1980) and Honeydew on the Wormwood (1984). A few translations and draft letters are written on drafts of other works by Glyn Jones.
