Commissioned by the Cardiff Festival of Music in association with the Welsh Arts Council, and first performed at St Germains Church, Cardiff, 4 December 1987 by the John Davies Singers, conducted by John Davies and with organ played by Huw Tregelles Williams. Written as one of a sequence of three works celebrating devotion to the Virgin Mary which include his Opus 56 (4/8), Opus 57 (1/42) and Opus 58 (4/10).

Ink score, titled Opus 56: 'The Hymn to the Virgin: Canticle No.4 for Female Voices and Harp', and dated 1986. With words attributed to the 15th-century poet Ieuan ap Hywel Swrdwal. Written as one of a sequence of three works celebrating devotion to the Virgin Mary which include his Opus 57 (1/42) and Opus 58 (4/9 and 4/10).
