A photostat facsimile of Balliol MS 353, a commonplace book of Sir John Price (1502?-1555). The manuscript contains genealogical memoranda relating to the family of John Price (Siôn ap Rhys) and his wife, Johan Williamson, notes on Welsh bardic grammar, proverbs, triads, and miscellaneous memoranda; transcripts of Welsh poetry including eulogies of the compiler and of his ancestors. A collection of 'cywyddau' attributed to Dafydd ap Gwilym (17), Dafydd Nanmor (2), Hugh Morys, Madog Benfras, Iolo Goch, and Rhys Cain; 'cerddi' by Ellis Roberts Cowper, and Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu') ('Llythur Cymun Morgan Goch y Melinydd', with an addition by William Jones, and 'Cerdd Marwnad Llewelyn bach o Gaer ludd'); 'englynion' by Merddyn Emrys and Huw Huws; and an English 'charol to be sung on Christmas morning' by Hugh Hughes, 'late of Foel near Llanerchymedd'.

A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.

Miscellaneous papers and note-books containing notes, extracts, transcripts, lists, etc., in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume. The contents of pp. 53-60, 73, 75, 86-9, 91, 143-206, 209-17, 233-8, and 279-90 consist mainly of lists or groups of Welsh words and phrases sometimes with English definitions and/or illustrative excerpts from the works of Welsh poets. Some of these lists or groups contain words extracted from one source such as poems by, or attributed to, Taliesin, or to be found in 'The Book of Taliesin', John Bunyan: Taith y Pererin, William Wotton: Cyfreithieu Hywel Dda . . . (London, 1730), etc. P. 13 is inscribed 'Glynn Papers 1821. Customs of the Manor of the Lordship of Coity Wallia. From a Copy in the Hand Writing of Richard Jenkins, Esqr., of Hensol Castle, Glamorgan, 1714', and is followed (pp. 17-27) by an incomplete copy of the presentments of a jury of survey for the lordship and manor of Coyty Wallia aforesaid [co. Glamorgan], 1631 [/2]. An imperfect volume, the contents consisting of transcripts, in a hand possibly of the first half of the seventeenth century, of Welsh poems being mainly strict-metre poems in the form of 'cywyddau'. These are numbered and, if the manuscript when complete contained the whole sequence, the folios at the beginning containing poems 1-18 and most of poem 19 are now wanting. Many mid-volume and possibly some end folios are also missing. The greater part of the volume is written in a number of artificial or contrived copying hands, the scribe in some instances appearing to simulate a gothic script. The initial capitals of some of the poems have elaborate decorative detail sometimes incorporating the outlines of human figures or faces, the latter mostly grotesques. The volume has been attributed to a Glamorgan or Gwentian copyist of the first half of the seventeenth century (see TLLM, t. 44). If this dating is accepted stanzas such as those by Rhys Prichard probably have to be regarded as later insertions. There are marginal annotations in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg').

A manuscript in the autograph of Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd) containing a copy of Nennius's 'Eulogium Britanniæ' (ff. 1-57); notes relating to Nennius copied from a manuscript in the hand of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt (ff. 67-88); triads copied from a manuscript in the hand of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt, by Lewis Morris in 1738, with marginal and intertextual notes (ff. 89-112), and from the Red Book of Hergest (ff. 137-152); 'Araith Iolo Goch' (ff. 114-116); poetry, the poets cited including Aneirin, Iolo Goch and Mabclaf ap Llywarch (ff. 119-157b); etc. On f. 189 is a table of contents in a later hand. On f. iv the title page reads 'Y Cynfeirdd Cymreig, Vol. II'.
This manuscript is the source of the text of Series I of the Triads in the Myvyrian Archaiology Vol. ii, pp. 1-22. The englynion at ff. 119-122b are practically the same as those in Myvyrian Archaiology, pp. 543-547, col. i, but that the arrangement is different. The text at f. 132 was copied in September 1758 from an autograph manuscript of Edward Lhuyd. The text at f. 154 verso was transcribed from Llyfr Coch Nannau (see Mostyn MS 144) 'and collated it with my brother Lewis Morris MSS'.

A volume containing an interleaved copy of Thomas Matthews, Gwaith Iolo Goch, vol. 1 (Llanuwchllyn, 1915), bound together with a copy of David James (Defynnog), Owain Glyndwr: His Life and Times (Cardiff, 1915), which was published as part of his volume Hanes Owain Glyndwr (Cardiff, 1915), with notes, press cuttings, 1920-1934, and other printed items added by R. D. Roberts relating to the lives and works of Iolo Goch and Owain Glyndŵr, together with a photograph, 1906, of Llechryd, Llanefydd, co. Denbigh.

A note, 1926, in the hand of A[rthur] Foulkes-Roberts, highly critical of Saunders Lewis, pasted on a printed review by the latter of Cywyddau Iolo Goch ac Eraill, ed. by Henry Lewis, et al. (1925), which appeared in Y Llenor, October 1926.

A volume of transcripts of Welsh poetry. The first fifty-one folios contain copies, in a 16th-century hand, of 'cywyddau' by Siôn Cent, Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Madog Benfras, Gruffudd Gryg, Dafyddd ab Edmwnd, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Tudur Aled, Dafydd Nanmor and others. The remainder of the volume (ff. 52-147) is in several hands of the end of the 17th century. At the head of f. 52 is the following note:- 'Haec sequens Collectio facta fuit Opera P.V.A.M. ...', the initials probably representing the name of Peter Vaughan, M.A., who was vicar of Llangernyw from 1682 to 1689. This part of the manuscript contains the names and arms of the fifteen tribes of Gwynedd; pedigrees of some Abergele families (among them that of Peter Vaughan himself) taken from the books of Sion Tudur and Rhys Cain; an account of the five residences of Sir Roger Mostyn in 1682; poetry in strict and free metres by Sion Tudur, Morus Dwyfech, Richard Phylip, Gryffydd Phylip, Guto'r Glyn, Maredudd ap Rhys, Edmwnd Prys, Lewis Glyn Cothi and others; etc.

A volume, [1813x1815] (watermark 1813), containing translations into English verse, probably by Sir John Bernard Bosanquet (see pencil note on f. 2), of Welsh poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym (ff. 4-5), Aneirin (ff. 6-7 verso), Taliesin (ff. 8-10), Gwalchmai ap Meilyr (ff. 11-13), Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr (f. 14 recto-verso) and Iolo Goch (ff. 16-17 verso).
Also included are notes on the poets and their works (ff. 20-30 verso) and an English translation of triads attributed to Catwg Ddoeth (ff. 18-19 verso). The volume is illustrated with six ink and wash sketches (ff. 3, 4, 5, 11, 17 verso, 26), including one of Cilgerran Castle, Pembrokeshire (f. 4). Frances Elizabeth Lewis (d. 1846), to whom the volume was given (see f. 2), was the sister of Mary Anne (d. 1819), wife of J. B. Bosanquet.

Hughes, and Richard Hughes (? whether the last three named were the same person). Pp. 611-33 contain three poems two of which are attributed to Huw ap Wiliam ap Dd. ap Gronw and Siôn Morys.
