The file contains abstracts of the marriage settlements of William Owen and Mary Godolphin, 1730, and of Owen Ormsby and Margaret Owen, 1776; abstracts of title of William Owen (3) to lands in Salop, Caernarfonshire, Denbighshire and Merioneth, 1626-1728, compiled 1729, of Mary Jane Ormsby to a leasehold messuage in Welbeck Street, Marylebone, with the stables and coach house in Easley Mews, 1760-1806, compiled [c.1810], and of Elizabeth Owen to the estate at Trewylan, Montgomeryshire, 1659-1748, purchased from John Pryce in 1748; attested copies received from Mr Jackson in 1778, of marriage settlements and associated documents of Edward Owen and Meryell Greaves, daughter of Sir Richard Greaves, 1629, Robert Owen and Mary Edisbury, 1651, Edward Owen and Sarah Cotton, 1681, and Edward Owen of Woodhouse, 1730, and an agreement by William Owen of Woodhouse to convey to Thomas Baugh the messuage of Pentre David, Selatyn, 1777; and papers from the termination of the tenancies of William Symons and William Williams on a field called Trecanpraze, Parkan Praze or Park Chapell in the parish of Sithney in the manor of Peventon, Cornwall, implemented by Arundel Rogers, agent for the Brogyntyn trustees, 1828-1830.

A volume, 1739-1740, partly in the hand of Edward Wynne, Chancellor of Hereford, containing a record of the funeral expenses of his wife Ann Wynne, 1739 (ff. 3-4); an inventory of Mrs Wynn's wearing apparell and house furniture, 1739 (ff. 8-9 verso); claims made by or on behalf of Mrs Langford, the executrix of Mrs Susanah Mostyn, 1740 (ff. 4 verso-7); a copy of an inventory of Susanah Mostyn's goods, dated 30 April 1729 (ff. 19-13); etc.

Items of interest include a bill for port wine, 1729, prints of the ruins of abbeys, Castles, etc. in Glamorgan and Breconshire, for Thomas Pryse, 1740, mould to make mortar for the store house at Clarach, 1765, building work done at Trevane, Pembrokeshire, 1783, white stockings for Mrs Lewes of King Street, Carmarthen, bought at Trawsfynydd, 1784, and a medical bill for a servant of Edward Loveden Loveden, 1784.

Correspondents include W[illiam] .J[ones]. reporting a threat by William Powell of Nanteos to shoot Thomas Pryse for supporting Lloyd of Mabws, 1729; George Jones of Rhoscellan about Cardiganshire elections, his own advancement, seizure of the cargo of a West Indiaman by the customs at Aberystwyth, a ‘siege’ by William Powell at Ynysmaengwyn, and Erglodd timber, 1732-1744; David Roberts of Rug, 1738; James Lewes and Daniel Benbowe on Gogerddan estate matters, mislaid Cardigan records and a commission at Aberystwyth involving Jack Pugh, 1741-1743; Walter Pryse of Woodstock on family matters and potential expenditure in a Pembrokeshire election, 1743; William Dewey of Abingdon, with specifications for a cob wall to be built at Gogerddan, 1744; Charles Richardes on an exchange of lands with Mr Pryse, 1745; and Thomas Lloyd to Rodericke Richardes about settling problem tenancies, 1749.

Cases against Thomas Powell of Nanteos

Papers from cases brought against Thomas Powell of Namteos shortly after the election at Cardigan in 1729. The case brought by his opponent, Richard Lloyd [of Mabws], describes the corruption and violence surrounding the election. Depositions of witnesses, made before Thomas Pryse, mayor of Cardigan, suggest that Thomas Powell was the prime suspect.in the murder of Thomas Howell of Tre-main.

Burgess lists, affidavit, letters, etc.: Cardigan and Lampeter

Miscellaneous bundle containing burgess lists of Cardigan and Lampeter, and other papers relating to the consitution of the borough of Lampeter, 1729-1774. The lists include the names of burgesses of Cardigan, 1729, 1763 (also listing those sworn in 1741) ttenants of Alltyrodin, Blaendyffryn, tenants of Lewes Gwynne, others from various parishes in Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire, and those from Breconshire presented at Lampeter, 1774. The file also contains a copy draft affidavit in the Court of King’s Bench by Oakley Leigh, David Davies and John Davies about the appropriation of the offices of portreeve and steward of Lampeter by Thomas Edward and David Rice respectively, without due election, [post-1769];; a notice to the bailiffs to summon the cout leet of the manor, lordship and borough of Llanbedr Pont Steffan, 1774; and letters to Evan Jenkin from David Davies of Vrovach and John Paynter of Hafod, 1774 about the presentation of burgesses.
