Letters mainly to James Morice of Aberystwyth, then of Wallog, land surveyor and agent to the Gogerddan estate, 1810-1847. The files include some personal correspondence and a few letters of his wife’s family, Watkin of Moelcerney, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn,. There are occasional copies of his replies and forwarded letters from third parties. The main correspondents are Pryse Pryse at Buscot Park, Cunningham horticultural suppliers of Liverpool, John Ball of Swanage, the Williams family of Cwmcynfelyn, Robert Williams of Bangor, Richard Griffithes of Bishops Castle, the Office of Woods and Forests, and John Hughes of Aberystwyth. The letters are informative about the family, character and employment of James Morice as agent to Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, as well as his own financial affairs.. Many of the letters concern the enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno, describing both the technical and financial difficulties, sometimes incorporating relevant sketch plans, 1821-1836. Other topics include general Gogerddan estate affairs; the supply of slates from Aberllefenni near Machynlleth and quarry stone from Aberdovey; and the education of James Morice’s son, James. One file consists entirely of letters from Sophia Edwards of Oxfordshire, 1819-1837, and another concerns mainly the purchase of Bryngwyn, 1824-1833. Some letters include relevant financial accounts.
