A small group of loose sheets which accumulated during the preparation of J. H. Davies, The National Library of Wales. Catalogue of Manuscripts. Volume I. Additional Manuscripts in the Collections of Sir John Williams, bart G.C.V.O. (Aberystwyth, 1921). They consist mainly of a draft of the 'Introduction', material towards the 'Cross-Reference Numbers' to the Phillimore MSS and Phillipps MSS, one holograph and three autograph letters, 1921, from John Ballinger, National Library of Wales, and 'Queries for Mr Ballinger'.

Miscellaneous notebooks and unbound papers from the library of, and largely in the hand of, Owen Jones (1833-99), Calvinistic Methodist minister, man of letters, book collector and bibliographer, of Liverpool and Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, Montgomeryshire. They include a fragment of a late eighteenth century manuscript containing 'Carol Plygain' by John Cadwaladr, verses by Ellis William, Llwunc[y]nfal, etc. ('Howel Jones his Book ... 1792,' 'Howel Jones Llwyncunfal ... ber 1792'); a volume of poetry including three libretti entitled 'Samson (Cyfieithiad o waith [John] Mil[ton]', 'Deborah' ('Finis May 4th 1861') and 'Y Cread' ('11/3/62'), and Welsh and English originals and translations, 1860-3 (e.g. 'The Hymns of A[nn] G[riffiths] rendered into English', 'Gray's Elegy'); a draft list of 'Hen Ddiarhebion' [old Welsh proverbs] rendered into Welsh verse (nos 1-540; one section dated 3 March [18]63); copious draft bibliographies of prose and poetry works by individual Welsh authors; etc. The material was originally tied in a brown paper wrapper inscribed by J[ohn] B[allinger], 'Library of the late Rev. Owen Jones, notes lent to Mr J. H. Davies by Miss Janet Jones, & by him deposited in the N[ational] L[ibrary of Wales]. 15-12-[19]09'.

A catalogue compiled by J. H. Davies of NLW Additional Manuscripts 1-408 (also referred to in these descriptions (which are on loose sheets of paper) as Llanstephan MSS 201-469 and Williams MSS 470-610). Enclosed is a letter, 13 October 1919, from John Ballinger, Librarian of the National Library of Wales, to J. H. Davies relating to the catalogue (see J. H. Davies, The National Library of Wales. Catalogue of Manuscripts, Volume I Additional Manuscripts in the Collections of Sir John Williams ... (Aberystwyth, 1921)).

Transcripts of 'An Account of the Life of the Revd. Mr Wm Roth [sic] ....,' An account of Mr Robt Powel, Vicar of Cadegstone near Neath, Glamorganshire ... ', 'An account of the life and Death of Mr W. Cradock,' and 'Short Hints respecting the Life of Revd Rees Pritchard Vicar of Llanddyfry' from an unspecified source. On the envelope John Ballinger has written 'Transcript from Thos Charles' MS Account of early Nonconformists. Cymdeithas Llen Cymru'.

A manuscript index to J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Môn) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9) compiled for J. H. Davies by T. Vaughan Roberts, London and completed in 1911. The general index (420 pp.) is followed by lists of 'Words and phrases characteristic of the Morrises or illustrating forms commonly used by them' and 'Books, Pamphlets, Manuscripts & Poems referred to', references to 'Trades & Professions', and a number of corrections. Other items ('Removed from the manuscript before it was sent to Mr Jenkin James, January 7, 1931') consist of a letter, 1911, from the compiler, T. Vaughan Roberts to J. H. Davies, and a letter, 1902, from John Ballinger, Cardiff to J. H. Davies enclosing notes and items of verse (mainly by Lewis Morris) copied by J. Ifano Jones from 'an imperfect copy of Dr John Davies's Dictionary, 1632, once the property of Lewis Morris' and from copies of [Huw Jones], Diddanwch Teuluaidd (Llundain, 1763) which belonged to John William Prichard, Plas-y-brain and Nicholas Bennett respectively.

An imperfect copy of an unidentified edition of Ellis Pugh's Annerch ir Cymru [?c. 1750] wanting all before p. v and after p. 94 (although it would appear that only one page [95] is wanting at the end). Also included are three letters to J. H. Davies from John Ballinger, Cardiff, 1900, E. Cartwright, Dowlais, 1896, and S. N. Rhoads, Franklin Bookshop, Philadelphia, 1913, all on the subject of Annerch ir Cymru, and an offprint of an article by Frederick J. Gibbins entitled 'An early American Welsh book' from The Friends' Quarterly Examiner [1902] and given to [J. H. Davies] by the author 'With thanks for kind help'.

The file includes letters from Edward Anwyl (2), John Ballinger, Thomas Allen Glenn, Richard Griffith ('Carneddog'), T. Gwynn Jones, Alfred Neobard Palmer, R. Silyn Roberts, T. F. Roberts, John Rowland, A. Osmond Williams, and Mallt Williams.

The file includes letters from H. H. Asquith, John Ballinger, Alfred T. Davies, W. J. Gruffydd, I. D. Hooson, John M. Howell, Aberaeron, G. Hartwell Jones (3), Henry Haydn Jones, Owen Griffith Owen ('Alafon'), and A. Osmond Williams.

Photocopies of letters, 1970s-80s, including two from Major Herbert Lloyd-Johnes, and other papers, all relating to Sir John Ballinger (1860-1933), first Librarian of the National Library of Wales; together with photocopies of his letter of application, 1880, with accompanying testimonials, for the post of Librarian of Swansea Free Library (see also NLW ex 1149-50).
