A negative photostat facsimile of Welsh MS. 2 in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, being an incomplete early eighteenth century collection of poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Sion Philip, Rhisiart Philip, Edmund Price [sic], William Cynwal, Evan Bry[dy]dd hir, Lewis Môn, Sion Cent, Tudyr Aled, David ap Gwillim [sic], David Nanmor [sic] and others. On p. 76 is a text of 'Brenin dlysau ynys Brydai[n]'. Later eighteenth century additions include a certificate of a declaration of an oath by Edd. Vaughan of Lanymowddy, Merioneth, 2 November, 1750, that a red heifer sold at Dinnas Mowddy and the herd from which it is taken are free from the infection now raging among horned cattle in the Kingdom.

A volume containing a collection of Welsh proverbs, arranged alphabetically, and other proverbial texts in Welsh, with accompanying translations and commentaries in Latin, compiled by and in the hand of Dr John Davies, Mallwyd. Many of the entries are illustrated by quotations from Arabic, Greek and Latin sources.
The manuscript was probably Davies's working copy, which he continually revised and enlarged during the latter years of his life. Emendations and additons were made either by rewriting whole leaves, by pasting slips over existing leaves, tipping in slips of paper, or writing in the spaces between the proverbs originally written. About 2400 proverbs are contained in the volume and, of these, Davies published just under 1600, together with the other proverbial texts, all but a few without translation or commentary, in his Dictionarium Duplex ... (London, 1632). Davies later collated his manuscript with the published text and prefixed with an 'o' those proverbs not printed. Following the practice he had adopted in his dictionary, he prefixed with an asterisk those proverbs not published prior to 1632. The manuscript later came into the hands of the antiquary William Maurice (c. 1620-1680), Cefn-y-braich, Llansilin, who compiled, [c. 1674], a preface or 'prolegomena' to the volume (pp. 6-20), comprising: a title-page incorporating Marcus Zuerius Boxhorn's title-page to the condensed edition of the Welsh-Latin section of Davies's dictionary, which the former published in Originum Gallicarum Liber ... (Amsterdam, 1654); a copy of a letter from James Howell (1594?-1666) to Ben Johnson, Kal. April 1629, which includes a poem 'Upon Dr. Davies Brittish Grammer'; an extract from Davies's preface to his grammar, Antiquæ Linguæ Britannicæ ... (London, 1621); a list of Davies's works; transcripts of the Latin and Welsh prefaces to the collection of Welsh proverbs printed at the end of his dictionary; extracts relating to these proverbs from Boxhorn's treatise; a copy of the Latin poem by Edmund Prys, archdeacon of Merioneth, which was printed as part of the preface to Davies's grammar; and an extract relating to Davies and the Welsh language from Historia Universali which Boxhorn published in Metamorphosis Anglorum ... ([Leiden], 1653). William Maurice has also added notes and comments on the text throughout the volume, including the gloss 'hoc est Proverbia Cymbro-Wallica Latinitate donata et paraphrastice explicata per Doctiss. Jo. Daviesium Malluydensem SS. Th. D.' on Davies's title 'Adagia Britannica' (p. 21), and 'Hoc Opus multijugæ Prudentiæ veterum Cymmeriorum alias Cymbrorum, fideliter transcribitur secundum Archetypum hunc Daviesianum per Guilhelmum Mauricium Cymnebraçensem nunc Lansilinensem philobritannum 1o. Maij Ano. Dni 1674' (p. 202). The manuscript was also seen by Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt, as the emendations 'Vfudd' for 'Ynfyd' and 'humilis' for the corresponding Latin 'Insipiens' in his hand on p. 202 indicate.

(a) A notebook (32 pp.) in the autograph of Dafydd Jones o Drefriw, containing 'cywyddau' by Edmwnd Prys and Wiliam Cynwal and a brief account of the dispute between them, etc. The 'cywyddau' are numbered 1-3, 50-54, and 36. On the cover EW has written 'Fragments of Edmund Prys, & Wm Cynwal', and 'Iolo Morganwg ai piau';
(b & c) Loose papers containing a list of books, a statement of accounts between David Jones and Richard Lathrop, a draft title-page for 'Y Greal Bychan', and poetry by RT, etc.

The volume has annotations by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') who has designated it 'Llyfr Ystrad Alun' and who transcribed some poems from it - see NLW MS 1658.

A composite volume (pp. 1-540 with two pages not numbered) containing miscellaneous notes, lists, transcripts, extracts, etc., in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'). The contents include pp. 1-20, an account of the revision of the regulations relating to the craft and conduct of Welsh bards and musicians, the rules of 'cynghanedd', and the twenty-four strict poetic metres undertaken in connection with, or at, the 'eisteddfod' held under the patronage of Gruffudd ap Nicolas at Carmarthen [circa 1450], anecdotes relating to Dafydd ap Edmwnd and the said 'eisteddfod', etc., the greater part of the material being allegedly extracted 'O Lyfr Iago ab Dewi yn awr gan Mr. Thomas Evans o Frechfa, 1799' (this is the same account, etc., as that which is found in NLW MS 13096B, pp. 171-95, for which see above); 21-2, biographical and other notes on Sir Robert ab Amon, lord of Glamorgan [late 11th cent.], and his brother Richard; 23-4, notes on the Reverend Samuel Williams and his son the Reverend Moses Williams, a list of 'eisteddfodau' held at Carmarthen, Aber Marlas, and Castell Gweblai, 1452-1486, an anecdote relating to the poet Dafydd ab Edmwnd, a transcript of two 'englynion' by, or attributed to, the said poet, etc.; 25-7, extracts from the manuscript copy of the 'Lib[er] Land[avensis]' in Jesus College [Oxford, i.e., Jesus College MS 20]; 28-9, lists headed 'Names of some Constellations of Fixed Stars peculiar to the Britons', and 'Some Constellations in Glamorgan'; 33-7, a version of the Welsh legend of the birth of Taliesin (see The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . . A composite volume comprising Llyfr Gweddi Gyffredin (Llundain, 1634) lacking title-page, and Llyfr y Psalmau, wedi ev cyfieithv a'i cyfansoddi ar fesvr cerdd yn Gymraeg by Edmund Prys, Archdeacon of Merioneth (Llundain, 1638) with many seventeenth- and eighteenth-century marginal and additional notes in Welsh, English, and Latin. The manuscript additions include a prayer in Welsh (Llyfr Gweddi Gyffredin B8v), verse in Welsh by Ellizabeth Price 'i dyrfa Llandanwg'(ibid 06), englynion by 'H.M.' [Huw Morus] and 'H.E.R.' (ibid Aa1v), a riddle in Latin (ibid Gg7), and entries relating to the births and baptisms of the children of Richard Poole of Tyddin y Felin, Llanfair-iuxta-Harlech, co. Merioneth (f. ii, ibid Mm2v, Llyfr y Psalmau A1v), and of Richard Vaughan, esq., of Corsygedol (f. iv verso).
