On the back of the former is a fragment of a Welsh poem beginning - 'a fi'n eiste'n obrydd...'

A volume (78 pp.) written in several hands, in part at least between 1755 and 1763, containing medical recipes headed 'Cynghorion', 'englynion' by William Phylip, Gr. ap Ievan 'o lannerch llyweni', 'Robin ddu o hir Addig', Einion ap Gwalchmai, extracts from 'Talysau [sic] yr hen Oesodd' [sic]', 'englynion' between 'Colwyn' and 'Craff' ('gwaith brus mawr. Evanvs Thomasvs'), 'geiriau gwir Taliessin', and a numbered series of medical recipes headed 'Cynghorion amriw ddolurie'. There are also memoranda giving the date of birth of some of the children of Thomas Lewis and Margratte [sic] Evanes, etc., and some accounts [?Penllyn district, Merioneth].

A composite volume comprising: (I) Four booklets in the hand of David Jones ('Dewi Fardd', 1708?-85), Trefriw containing an incomplete text of his '[Cronicl] Hanes [Cymru] a'i Thrig[olion] er amser Julius Caesa[r] hyd amser neu Deyrna[siad] y Brenhin Iago y Cyntaf'; a 'cywydd' by Tho. Prys; an incomplete list of titles (pp. 484-526) in David Jones : Blodeu-gerdd Cymry (Y Mwythig, 1759); and carols, etc., among them 'Newyddion Gyng'aneddau' by David Jones. (Ii) A booklet largely in the hand of Evan Thomas (ob. 1781), Cwmhwylfod, Sarnau, near Bala containing extracts from Y Drych Cristianogawl (Rhotomagi, 1585); and poetry in strict and free metres by Evan James, Sr. Rogier, Edward Sam[ue]l, Dafydd yn Ifan ('o Lanfair Careinion'), Edwart Moris, John Edward Ma..., Hugh Hughes and John William(s); and anonymous compositions, among them a 'Hymn yngulch duwdod Iesu Grist ...'. The spine is lettered 'Mân Lyfrau Dewi Fardd ac eraill'.

A manuscript in two volumes containing a corpus of Welsh strict-metre verse consisting almost entirely of 'cywyddau', and a few Welsh prose items. The foliation of the 'text' (original f. 1 missing, original ff. 2-21 renumbered 1-20, a previously unnumbered folio between original ff. 21-2 now f. 21, ff. 22-623 as originally numbered with 75 twice and 265 and 577 missed out) is continuous, and the division into vol. I (ff. 1-300), now NLW MS 13061B, and vol. II (ff. 301-623), now NLW MS 13062B, occurs in the middle of a poem. Unnumbered leaves of later origin than those of the text have been inserted at the beginning and end of each volume. The manuscript, sometimes referred to as 'Y Byrdew Mawr', is in the hand of Thomas ab Ieuan of Tre'r-bryn, parish of Coychurch, co. Glamorgan, the scribe of NLW MSS 13063B, 13069B, and 13085B, and was probably transcribed in the last quarter of the seventeenth century, partly from the manuscripts of an earlier Glamorgan copyist, Llywelyn Siôn (see TLLM, tt. 95, 167-73, 218-19, 268; IM, tt. 87, 154, 264; and IMCY, tt. 81, 175). It was probably presented to Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') by the copyist's grandson also named Thomas ab Ifan (see TLLM, tt. 170, 268). The contents include (revised foliation) :- 1 recto - verso, rules re interpreting the significance of dreams in relation to the phases of the moon (incomplete); 1 verso-8 recto, another set of rules (183) for interpreting dreams ('Deall braiddwydon herwydd Daniel broffwyd'); 8 recto-11 recto, a sequence of forty-eight 'englynion' entitled 'Englynion rhwng Arthur a Liflod i nai' (see The Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, vol. The unnumbered folios at the beginning of each volume contain a list of the contents of the volume giving, in the case of the poems, the name of the poet, in a hand bearing a strong resemblance to that of William Owen Pughe, and the title of the poem, in the hand of Edward Williams. The folios at the end of the first volume contain an index of the bards whose works appear in both volumes. This is possibly in the hand of Hugh Maurice, tanner and copyist. On one of the added folios at the end of the second volume is a poem to the Reverend John Jones, D.D., dean of [the cathedral church of] Bangor. Both volumes contain marginalia in the hand of Edward Williams.

A manuscript in a number of seventeenth century hands, with some eighteenth century additions, containing 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' (of which several are addressed to the family of Wynn of Foelas, Ysbyty, Denbighshire) by Robin Ddu, Rys Kin [Cain], Ifan (Ieuan) Llafar, Edward Brynllys, Rees ap Robert, Rhisiartt (Richard) Kynnwal, Sion Tvdvr (Tuder), Owain Gwynedd, Howell ap Syr Mathew, Thomas Prys, etc.; 'tribannau' and 'penillion' by Ievan Griffith otherwise Y Tailiwr Llawen (1662), Rd. Edwards, etc.; 'The Gipsies Paraphrase found in the Eaves of an house in Shropshire ... 1616 and kept since by the Lord Lumley'; prophecies, in English, concerning the Civil War, etc.; a list of animal charges on armorial shields; 'Prophwydolieth Dewi; and 'Penillion' entitled 'Datcaniad i Mr. Dauidd Lloyd o flaunyddol'. There is at the beginning a descriptive note on the manuscript and a detailed list of contents in a nineteenth century hand. Among the insets are the certificate, 1885, of the purchase by George T. Jones from his mother-in-law Catherine Evans for a sum of 10s. 6d. of manuscripts belonging to his late father-in-law; an undated letter from J[ohn] Jones ['Myrddin Fardd'], Chwilog, to [J. H.] Davies (the return of a manuscript, a payment by Mr. O'Brien Owen of Caernarfon); and a pencilled note by J. H. Davies describing the manuscript as 'Llyfr Thomas Roberts 1677'.

A mutilated early seventeenth century manuscript of poetry in strict metres in the hand of Thomas ap Edward (Edwardes). It contains 'cywyddau' by Roger Kyffine, David ap Gwilym, Owen ap Gwilim, Gwerfyl Mechain, y Doctor John Kent, Gruffyth ap Ieuan ap Lle'n Vychan, Ieuan Klywedog, John Fylip, Iolo Goch, H[u]w Dyfy, Moris ap Howel ap Tudur, William Kynwall, Ieuan Dyfi, Howell Kilan, Gvto or Glyn, Gruffyth Hiraethog, Ieuan ap Gruffyth Leia, Robin Ddv, David ap Edmwnd, D'd Nanmor, Sr Rys ap Hary, Tydvr Alet, and Ieuan Lla[var] and anonymous 'cywyddau'; and 'englynion' by sion Tud[u]r, [ ] Lwyd, Moris ap Ieuan ap D'd and Hugh ap Moris, and anonymous 'englynion'. The scribe gives his descent (f. 19b) as Thomas ap Edward ap David ap Ieuan bach ap Egion ap Ho'll ap Kynfrig ap Lle'n ap Madok ap Ieuan ap Lle'n ap Kynfrigg ap Ririd ap Riwallon ap Kynvyn ap Gwrstan [ap] Gwaith Voed and he has also (f. 34b) entered the dates of the birth of his children, Katterin (12 October 1612), Thomas (7 June 1615), and Jane (11 January 1613/14). A portion of the volume (ff. 30b-56b) and the marginal notes have been transcribed by Owen Jones ('Manoethwy', 1838-66) in Cwrtmawr MS 401, pp. 1-25.

An imperfect manuscript lettered 'Llyfr Tesni' containing astrological and other texts and tables, such as 'llyma y XII Arwydd', 'helynt yr wybyr' ('devddeg gwynt y sydd'), 'Arwyddion' based on the incidence of thunder within each month, 'llyma Rifedi yr hyn sydd, o orie ymhob mis or flwyddyn', 'llyma glandyr a elwir treiad ymryson', a table for the years 1690-1794 indicating the golden number ('prif') and dominical letter ('llythyren y Svl'), 'devddec mis sydd yn y flwyddyn', 'englynion ir prifiav ysydd yn y misoedd hyny', a table of the cycle of the sun and the moon, 'Brevddwidion y lloer yn ol llyfr y gwybodeth', 'Era Pater', 'Englynion y Misoedd' by Aneirin gwawdydd ('yn llys Maelgwyn gwynedd Brenin Brytaniaid'), 'Englynion yr Eira Mynydd' by Mabgloch ab Llowarch hen, 'Cowydd ir ffenix' by Sion Phylip, 'devddeg gair gwir', 'Cowydd ir devddeg gair gwir, by Thomas ap Evan (1629), and 'llyma henwav y brenhinoedd a farnwyd yn ore or brytaniaid ... 24 sydd o honynt. The volume was written by Richard 'ysgripiwr' (the scribe) during the period January ? 1691/2 - April 1692; in addition, some recipes (for ink, how to write with gold) in an 18th century hand.

A commonplace book of Merioneth interest largely in the hand of Robert Prys Morris ('Robyn Frych'), Dolgellau. It contains 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Tudur Penllyn, Risiart Phylip ('o Ardudwy'), Gutto'r Glyn, Huw Arwystl, Wiliam Llyn, Sion Mowddwy, Owain Gwynedd, Iolo Goch, Vaughan Jones ('Fychan y Gwyndill') (19c), Dafydd ab Ieuan ab Owain, Simwnt Fychan, Sion Dafydd Penllyn, Watkin ab Richard, Tudur Aled, D[afy]dd Ll[wyd] ab Lly[wely]n ab Gruffydd, Gruffydd Phylip ('o Ardudwy'], Ffoulk Prys ('mab Edmunt Prys Archdiagon Meirionydd'), Dafydd Ddu Hiraddug, Ll[ywely]n Goch ap Meurig Hen, Morris Dwyferch (recte Dwyfech) and Dafydd ap Gwilym, together with an incomplete index; records relating to the Quaker burial ground at Llwyn-du, parish of Llwyngwril, being (i) a document signed by Thomas Westcombe on behalf of the Western Quarterly Meeting of the Society of Friends, 1876, allowing (with reservations) the application of Robert Pugh, Llwyngwril, for the ground to be used for interment by the Wesleyan Congregation at Llwyngwril, (ii) a covering letter, 1876, from Thomas Westcombe, Worcester to Robert Pugh, and (iii) a note signed by W[illia]m Norris, Coalbrookdale, 1876, on the trusts of the ground, with specific reference to the conveyance of 1756 to Abraham Darby of Coalbrookdale of the Llwyndu and Tyddyn y Garreg burial grounds; an account by Robert Prys Morris, 1883, of the early schooling of his son John Prys at Dolgellau, and an entry by Robert Prys Morris in 1877 relating to the death of his mother Elinor Morris in 1875; Merioneth pedigrees (e.g. Owen of Dolgellau, Edwards of Talgarth, Owen of Cae'rberllan, Anwyl of Erylaran, etc., Vaughan of Hengwrt); annotated lists of place names in the separate townships of the hundreds of Talybont and Estimaner extracted from a rental, 1875, and of place names from two eighteenth century parish records of Towyn; particulars of foreign mission collections by children of Salem, Dolgellau and of Llyn y Penmaen churches, 1882, the secretary and treasurer being Robert Prys Morris; an adjudication by Robert Prys Morris, 1883, on 'Traethawd Hanesyddol - Abergynolwyn a'r gymdogaeth yn ystod yr haner can' mlynedd diweddaf'; an account by W. Wynne Ffoulkes of the tumulus known as Tomen Pentref near Dolgellau (from Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1874, pp. 313-19); etc. Other sources quoted by the scribe include a paper lent by Mr Owain Owain, Hendref, Abergynolwyn (p. 47) and manuscripts owned by Owain Williams, Waunfawr (pp. 42, 73 etc.).

A manuscript of the third quarter of the eighteenth century largely in the hand of Richard Foulke of Penygraig [parish of Llansilin]. It contains 'cerddi', 'Ymddiddanion', 'carolau', 'dyriau', etc. by Hugh Morris, Humphre Ralph ('Gwas Mr. Richards Person Llanvyllin, 1756), Jonathan Hughes, Edward Rowland, Arthur Jones (1758), Hugh Jones ('o Langwm'), John Richard ('or bryn côch') (poem torn away), John Griffiths (1757), Evan Arthur, William Philip, Gruffudd Phylip, Robert Edward Lewis ('o Gwm Mynach'), Matthew Owen and Rowland Vaughan ('o Gaer-gai, Esquire'), and anonymous poems; 'englynion' and 'cywyddau' by Ed[ward] Morris, Hugh Morris, Moris ap Robert ('o'r Bala'), Hugh Llyn and Jonathan Hughes; and a prayer entitled 'Gweddi cyn mynd i Gysgu ... Dyma yr weddi y bydde yr hen Richard Foulke o Rhiwlas taid Richard Foulke o Benygraig; ar taid yma ai Gwnaeth'.

A manuscript entitled 'Llyfr Ofer Gerddi Margaret Davies 1738', being a collection of 'carolau', 'dyrïau', 'Penillion', and 'englynion' compiled by Margaret Davies (c. 1700-85?), of Coetgae-du, Trawsfynydd, Merioneth. An analysis of the volume ('Bannau'r Llyfr hwn ... by the scribe describes the contents as follows: 'Y Part Cynta or Llyfr sydd O Garolau Maswedd gan mwya. Yna Cerddi ar amryw fesurau Er Gofyn amryw Roddion. Ac yna Dirifau ne ddyriau Mawl merched. Ychydig Alar Gerddi. Amryw fasweddgerdd I ferched Ac ar amryw fesurau. Englynion'. The authors represented in the volume are Hugh Maurice, Lewis Owen ('o Dyddyn y Gareg'), William Phylip, Hugh ab Cadwaladr, Robert Edward Lewis, Hugh ab Evan ('Caer Cyrach'), Willm. Dafydd Meyrick, Edward Maurice, Sr. Morgan, Robert Evan ('o Rhedyn Cochion'), Cadwaladr Roberts, Thomas Edwart ('o Blwy Cerig y Drudion'), Rees Jones [o'r Blaenau] (1737), Mr. Robt. Lloyd, W. Anwyl, Hengae, to his uncle Robert Vaughan, Dolymelynllyn (wages requested by an employee, news from Guilsfield) and on the dorse of address leaves of letters to Margaret Davies at Goedtref [Llanelltyd, Merioneth], at Plâstanyfynwent, Dolgelley, at Plas Tan y Bwlch, and at Berthlwyd, near Dolgelley; also bound in the volume (pp. 249-74) are printed 'carolau' and 'cerddi' by John Rhydderch, Huw Morys, Thomas Edwart ['Twm o'r Nant'], Morus Robert, Dafydd Thomas, and Gruffudd Edward ('o Lan-Silin').

Two volumes entitled 'Llyfr o Hen Ganeuon wedi eu cyfansoddi ers 200 mlynedd. 1900'. The volumes are in the hand of J. H. Davies and contain transcripts, with annotations and collations, of 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'dyrïau', 'englynion' and 'awdlau' from the Welsh School and Cymmrodorion groups of manuscripts in the British Museum Additional Collection (MSS 14866-15089). Among the insets are a folio from an eighteenth century manuscript containing an imperfect free-metre poem ('Can'), and transcripts of free-metre poems in the hands of J. Glyn Davies and E. A. Lewis of University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

An imperfect manuscript of poetry and prose compiled by Morrys Oliver, c. 2 May 1685. The poems comprise 'cywyddau', 'englynion' and verses in free metres by Sion Tudur, Rhys Cadwalader, Thomas Lloyd Iangof ('o Penmaen'), Thomas Price ('o blas Iolun'), Edward Morris ('or Perthi Llwydion') and Hugh Llwyd Cynfel, and anonymous poems and fragments. The prose items include 'areithiau' ('Annerch lythur ne araith', etc.) and 'Iachau'r [Achau'r] Cwrw'. There is an inscription in the hand of Mary Richards, Darowen.

A manuscript described as 'Llyfr o hen areithiau a Chywyddau' in the hand of Michael Prichard of Llan Llyfni. It contains poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Michael Prichard, Sion Phylipp, Sion Tydur, Rhys Cain, Huw Llwyd Cynfel, Robert ab Howel ab Morgan, William Llyn, Dafydd ab Euan ab Owen, y Rhys ab Ednyfed, Owen Griffith, Thomas Lloyd [recte Prys] (Plas Iolyn), Dafydd Manuel, Wmphrey Dafydd ab Ifan ('Clochydd Llann brenn Mair'), Elis Rowland, Gryffydd ap Llywelyn Fychan, Wiliam Cynwal, Edward ap Rhys, and Thomas Llwyd (Penmen), and anonymous poems; 'Hanes y Twrstan, neu araith S. Tudyr', 'Breuddwyd Sion Tudur', and 'Prognosticasiwn Sion Tydur'; and a mediaeval Welsh glossary ('Llymma bart o'r hen Gymraeg; ar iaith arferedig wrthi') extracted from a book of Thomas Price of Plas Jolyn. The volume was compiled during the period 1726-9. There are a few additions in other hands, among them 'englynion' in praise and in memory of Michael Prichard by William Elias, [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), etc. At the end are two incomplete indexes, the one by Michael Prichard and the other by Owen Williams, Waunfawr. The spine is lettered 'Michael Prichard MS'.

An imperfect manuscript consisting largely of a collection of Welsh strict-metre poems including a number of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau', 1534-1593 and undated, by, and possibly in the hand of, Meurig Dafydd [of Llanisien, near Cardiff] (see IMCY, tt. 67-70, 108-10; and TLLM., tt. 72, 76-8), and transcripts of poems by Dafydd Bennwynn, W[i]llia]m Kynwal, Gr[uffydd] ap Ieuan Lle'nn Vychan, William Llun, Sils ap Siôn, Ieuan ap Howel Swrdwal, Davydd Goch, Tyder Alled, Sion Tydyr, Ieuan ap Huw, Deio Dyo Dy Benedeniol, Hari Prys Gwilim Goch ? Domas 'o sir Gaervyrddin', John y Kent, Howel D'd ap Ieuan ap Ris, and Rus ap Hari. Of this second group of poems some appear to be in the same hand as the poems by Meurig Dafydd and some in a different hand or hands of the same or a later period. There are a few marginal notes in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg').

The volume is almost entirely in the autograph of Margaret Davies [Coetgae-du, Trawsfynydd]. The 'cywyddau' have been numbered, possibly at a date later than the time of writing, and it appears that several folios are wanting at the beginning. The initials 'P. W.' or 'P. Wm.' sometimes occur at the end of a 'cywydd' near the name of the poet.

A volume of poetry transcribed by Lewis Owen [Tyddyn y garreg, Dolgellau, Merioneth] during the last quarter of the seventeenth century. It contains 'cywyddau', 'englynion', 'penillion', 'carolau', etc. by Lewis Owen, Rowland Owen, John Vaughan, William Phylyp, Dafydd Nanmor, Robin Du o fôn, John Owen, Owen Gwynedd, Sion Tydder, Bedo Brwynllysg, Jon. Phylip [Siôn Phylip], Hugh Lloyd Cynddel [recte Cynfal], Morys Dwyferch [recte Dwyfech], Dafydd ap Ifan ap Owen, Sion Dafydd Trefor [Syr Dafydd Trefor], John Brwynog, Thomas Pris [Plas Iolyn], Rowland Prys, John Davies ['Siôn Dafydd Las'], Sr. Reese, Sion Parry, Hugh Morris, Oliver Roger, Ellis Wynn, William Hu[m]ffr[eys], Robert Owen and [? Dafydd] Cadwaladr, together with anonymous poems and fragments. At the end of the volume are a leaflet entitled 'Dirgelwch i'r Rhodianwr ar y Sabbath', published by 'Cymdeithas y Traethodau Crefyddol' [Religious Tracts Society] (No. 17) (mounted on the blank leaf of a letter addressed to the Revd. Mr [Thomas] Richards, Darowen), and 'englynion' by Sion Tudur (in the hand of Mary Richards [Darowen]) and Wa[l]ter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'].

A late eighteenth century collection of poetry in the hand of John Morris, Glan'r Afon containing 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'ymddiddanion', etc. in free metres and a few englynion by Hugh Morus, Edward Samuel ('Person Llan-garw Gwyn'), [David Jones] ('Dewi Fardd'), Richard Parry ('or Ddiserth'), Morys ap Robert ('o'r Bala'), Robert Evans ('o blwy Meifod'), Mr Robert Wynn ('Vicar Gwyddelwern'), Owen Gruffydd, Ellis Rowland (Harlech), Matthew Owen ('o Langar'), Mr W. Williams ('Person Llan Aelian yn Rhos'), 'Dai Seion' ('o Gaernarfon'), Mr William Williams [recte Wynn] ('o Langynhafal'), Sion Powel ('o Lansannan'), Edward Richard, [Walter Davies] ('Gwallter Mechain'), Jonathan Hughes, Edward Morris, Lewis Glyn Cothi and David Ellis. Preceding the text are 'englynion' by David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'], David Ellis, [David Jones] ('Dewi Fardd') and Evan Evans ['Ieuan Fardd'] ('Gweinidog Llanllechio' [recte Llanllechid]) and 'Awdl y Nef' by 'Ieuan Fardd ag Offeiriad'; a list of contents of the volume ('Testyn Caniadau'r Llyfr hwn'); an introduction by the scribe, dated at Glan'r Afon, 24 December 1793. The collection was begun probably in 1788.

Pages 1-160 and 165-232 contain a collection of Welsh free- and strict-metre poems (medieval to seventeenth century) including poems by Howell Thomas Dauid, Jenk[in] Richard, William Jenkin, Giles ap John, David Du Hir Addig, Charles Thomas, Robert Lia, Rys Goch 'o Fochgoron', John Kent, John Jones, Rich. Watkins, clerk, John Tydyr, Rhys Parri, Dafydd Llwyd Mathey, Hugo Dauids, vicarius, Tho. Lewis, Charles Jones, Mredyth ap Rosser, Res Brychan, Ievan Rhydd, Dafydd ap Gwilim, Ioroth Fyngllwyd, Lln. ap Ho. ap Ivan ap Gronow, Hugh Dafydd (? the same as Hugo Dauids, vicarius, above), Bedo ap Phe. Bach, Dafydd ap Edmond, Iolo Goch, Lln. ap Howell, Howel Swrdwal, Tydyr Aled, Hyw Penmal, and Edward Dafydd (the seventeenth century poet concerning whose identity see TLLM, tt. 96-100, and, for a different opinion, IM, t. 260 and R. Intermingled with the Welsh poems are a few English items including religious verse by Richard Morgan, clerk, alias Sir Richard y Fwyalchen, and an anonymous poem entitled 'An Epitaph vppon ould dotard Wroth' [? William Wroth, Puritan cleric]. Pages 161-163 and possibly part of p. 159 contain a record of payments or contributions by an unspecified person or persons, 1643-1646, in connection with the maintenance of royalist forces in co. Monmouth. These include contributions towards the garrisons at Monmoth, Raggland, Colbroock, and Abergev[eny], and towards the cost of provisions, weapons, etc. The volume is referred to as 'Llyfr Jenkin Richard(s)' and this is the Jenkin Richard(s) of Blaenau Gwent whose own poems form part of the text (see IMCY, tt. 82, 176; IM., tt. 257-8, 259-60; TLLM, t. 100; and Llên Cymru, cyf. III, t. 98). In TLLM., tt. 97, 100, poems by Edward Dafydd are said to be in the poet's own hand, but R. Geraint Gruffydd in Llên Cymru, cyf. V, t. 158 infers that the whole volume is in the hand of the aforementioned Jenkin Richard(s).
