Files relating to Gordon MacDonald's tenure as Governor or Newfoundland; primarily dealing with the administration of the dominion, official engagements and the arrangements for deciding its future which resulted in Confederation with Canada in 1949. The Sub-fond includes correspondence, drafts for speeches and radio broadcasts, employment, relations with the Newfoundland Commission of Government, groups campaigning for and against confederation and negotiations with the Canadian Government.

Appointment as Governor of Newfoundland

Series comprises documents related to the suspension of Responsible Government in Newfoundland in 1934 and the arrangements for the government of the dominion including the appointment of a Governor and a Commission of Government along with the Royal Commission appointing Gordon MacDonald as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Island of Newfoudland and its dependencies and the Government House visitors book and cash book for the period that MacDonald was in Newfoundland.

The papers of Gordon MacDonald, 1st Baron MacDonald of Gwaenysgor (1888-1966) comprising correspondence, copies of documents, speeches, transcripts for radio broadcasts, diplomatic dispatches, diaries, photographs and ephemera. They relate mainly to his political career as Labour Member of Parliament for Ince, Regional Controller for the Ministry of Fuel and Power for the Lancashire, Cheshire, and North Wales Region during WW2, Governor of Newfoundland and Paymaster General as well as his political interests in the Labour Party and international affairs and his Christian faith. The papers from his period in Newfoundland deal extensively with the negotiations and referenda related to confederation with Canada as well as the resulting political fallout.

Files related to the suspension of Responsible Government and arrangements for the subsequent governance of Newfoundland including Letters Patent passed under the Great Seal of King George V constituting the Office of Governor and Commander in Chief of the Island of Newfoudland and its dependencies dated 30 January 1934; Letters Patent under the Great Seal of King George V and dated 21 Jan 1934 appointing Frederick Charles Alderdice, Sir John Hope Simpson, William Richard Howley, Thomas Lodge, John Charles Puddester and Everard Noel Rye Trentham to the Commission of Government and Instructions passed under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet to the Governor and Commander in Chief of the Island of Newfoudland and its dependencies dated 30 January 1934,
