Royal Commissions,

A volume containing lists of commissions granted by the Crown during the period 1485-1661. Paper; pp. 1-125; 334 x 212; full parchment.

Usk Lancastrian school,

Resolutions for the establishment of a Lancasterian School at Usk, rules for its conduct, and minutes of the meetings of its committee of management, 24 June 1812–5 November 1823. Paper; 35 ff., unnumbered; 375 x 230; 1812-1823; half calf. At the end of the volume is a fragment of what appears to have been a list of pupils at the school. The earlier resolutions are not original, and must have been transcribed after the present volume was acquired by the committee. [See Western Mail, 7 January 1939, and Schoolmaster, 19 January 1939.

Estat au vray du trésor royal, année 1675.

A transcript, [18 cent., second ½] (watermark similar to Churchill, no. 317, dated 1770), of a summary account of the revenue and expenditure of the French Treasury, mainly for the year 1675 but compiled in 1678 by Gédéon Berbier du Metz, garde du Trésor royal, for king Louis XIV.
It includes incomes from ordinary taxes deducted in the généralités (ancient French tax dominions) on woods, bridges, roads and Paris duties, from the 'Cinq Grosses Fermes', gabelles and other indirect taxes, royal farms and 'Parties casuelles' (incomes related to the selling of public charges), from extraordinary taxes in Pays d'états (free-tax French lands) and Church 'don gratuit' and levies, and from the selling of annuities, 1674-1677 (ff. 4-65 recto); expenses from king's rolls and gifts, 1674-1678 (ff. 66-80 recto); with a total sum for the year 1675 (f. 80). The original summary account is believed to have been destroyed during the French Revolution.

Most of the transcripts are contemporary, the remainder, together with the marginal and other notes, being in an early eighteenth century hand. Paper; ff. 1-191, some unnumbered, some blank, and some cut away; 346 x 240; half sheepskin.
