Family letters

Letters from George Crawshay to his mother Louise Crawshay (12) 1840-1842, to his wife Eliza Crawshay (née Fife) (16, including one transcript) 1844-1874, including a series of letters written to her from Turkey, August-October 1874, and to his grandfather Georges Dufaud (1, copy) 1851. Also included are letters to George Crawshay from his parents (4) 1836-1839, his daughter Florence (2) [c. 1860]-1874, and other family members.

Letters to George Crawshay

Over sixty letters, 1840-1890, including some transcripts, mostly addressed to George Crawshay, from prominent political figures, reflecting his active rôle in politics, particularly with regard to the 'Foreign Affairs Committee' of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Among the correspondents are John Bright (1) 1854, Richard Cobden (13) 1844-1855, Ralph Waldo Emerson (4) 1847-1848, William Ewart Gladstone (1) 1857, Henry George Grey, 3rd earl Grey (7, including four transcripts) 1858-1880, Lajos Kossuth (1) 1855, John Stuart Mill (1) 1867, and Sir Robert Peel (1) 1846. Also included are eleven letters, 1854-1892, from George Crawshay including letters to Richard Cobden, Henry George Grey, 3rd earl Grey, and Harriet Angelina Urquhart, wife of David Urquhart, and transcripts of a letter from Giuseppe Garibaldi, 1859, and John Ruskin, 1860.

Journal

Journal of George Crawshay for the period October 1836-May 1837, spent by him in Freiburg in the care of a German tutor. Comments on the journal by Edmund Esdaile, found loose insde the volume, have been tipped in on f. i verso.

A small group of the papers, 1847-1890, of George Crawshay including poetry composed or translated by him; papers, [1830s]-1888, of his wife Eliza; and genealogical notes and other papers relating to the Crawshay family.

Esdaile family letters, &c.

Some twenty letters, [1860s]-1917, to Florence Esdaile (née Crawshay), and letters and papers, 1772-1950, of her husband James Kennedy Esdaile (d. 1918) and other Esdaile family members. Of mainly genealogical interest, they include three letters, 1772-1785 and n.d., from Miss M. John, sister-in-law of Archibald Esdaile, St Kitts, one-time governess to the children of George III.
