Uwchygarreg (Talybont Ddrain, Tythyn y Llwyn Gwyn, etc.)

Title deeds of properties called Talybont Ddrain, Tythyn y Llwyn Gwyn, Tyddyn Llidiart Lloyn Du, Bwlch Betty and Cleirie Ucha in the township of Uwchygarreg in the parish of Machynlleth, 1567-1689. They include a quitclaim by Ll'n ap Rees ap Ieuan ap Wilkog of Machynlleth to his son, John ap Lli' ap Rees, of Tythyn y Llwyn Gwyn, Tythyn Dol Gyradog, Tythyn Tal y Bont Drain, Tythyn Aber yr Hen Velin in Uwchygarreg, and other properties in Machynlleth, Penegoes and Darowen, 1567; a mortgage by Richard ap Owen Llewelin ap Gruffith, 1622, followed by a sale by John ap Richard ap Owen, to the mortgagee, Moris Jones, comprising Tal y Bont Ddrain, Bwlch y Betty, land in Blaen Hengwm, the site of a dairy house in Cwm Dole and a seat in Machynlleth parish church, 1634; mortgages by Moris and Rowland Jones, 1669-1678, followed by evidence of a sale to Rees Meredith, 1681. Tyddyn Llidiart Lloyn Du was conveyed by David ap Cad' to John ap Lle'n ap Res, 1571, passed successively to Richard ap John ap Lle'n ap Rees, John ap David ap Lle'n ap Gruffith, was mortgaged by David John David in 1648 and then sold to the mortgagee, John Richard, 1650; additional common lands encroached out of the manor of Cyfeiliog were granted by John Pughe of Mathafarn, 1657. There are several mortgages of Tythin Y Cleirie Ucha by Theodore Morgan 1658-1670, redeemed and reconveyed to the mortgagor in 1688. Finally it appears that Tyddyn Llidiart Lloyn Du, Talybont Ddrain and Bwlch Betty, a parcel of land in Blaenhengwm and the site of a summer house or dairy house in Cwmdole were conveyed to William Pughe of Mathafarn by Rees Meredith of Gwern Y Berre in Darowen, and Anne his wife, 1688; and likewise a conveyance of Cleirie Ucha by Theodor Morgan of Uwchygarreg, Gwen his wife and Griffith Morgan, their son, 1688-1689.

Boundary clauses include a great stone at the foot Moel y Cerrig Gwynnion, Nant y March, Eskyr Y Corddy, Nant y Ki, the river Rheidol, Nant y Corlanne, Nant yr Eithin and Hyddgen. Properties include Tythyn y Place Duy; Tythyn y Maes David Las and Tythyn y Cay Llwyd; Llyest Newidd, otherwise Dole y Saint, in two feoffments between the Owen family of Peniarth, Merioneth, John Pughe of the Inner Temple [1672/3] and William Pughe of Mathafarn, 1679; Kay’r Gellogg, otherwise Penrhiw’r Velyn; Kae David Las, otherwise Kae Adda Las, and Kae Poyth, released by William Pughe of Mathafarn to Mathew Pugh of Cwmhirole in Cemais, and Elizabeth, widow of Richard Ellis of Machynlleth, 1676/7; and Ffryth, leased by William Pughe, 1681/2. Names of other parties include Owen David ap Rees of Penegoes and Lle'nn ap Rees ap Ieuan ap Wilkog, 1582/3; Rowland David Lloid of Machynlleth, 1601; his cousin Richard Owen, Sir Roger Owen of Condover, Salop, and Edward Pryce of Cynfel, Merioneth, 1615; Thomas Owen of Llynlloed, Montgomeryshire, and Henry Parry of Machynlleth, 1674.

Uwchygarreg (Llyast Wen or Cwm Dole)

Title deeds of a cottage called Llyast Wen or Cwm Dole in the township of Uwchygarreg, Machynlleth, comprising the marriage settlement of Meredith Evans of Aberhenvelyn and Anne Anwill of Botalog, which also includes other parts of the Aberhenvelyn estate and the mill, Melin y Coed, 1678; an assignment of lease of Llyast Wen or Cwm Dole, 1691, by Francis Vaughan of Glanlerie, Cardiganshire, to Rowland Pughe of Mathafarn, granted in 1681 by the latter’s father, William Pughe; and deeds for the sale of the freehold by Meredith Evan to William Pughe, 1694.

Title deeds for a moiety of Bulch Safn y Dunant in the township of Uwchygarreg in the parish of Machynlleth, comprising successive deeds of sale by John ap Hugh Davies of Machynlleth to John Owen, 1615, to David ap John Owen, 1616, and to Morgan Thomas Moris of Machynlleth, 1629.

Parcel of bills, receipts and relevant letters from various business proprietors addressed to Pryse Pryse and [Jane] Cavallier, later Mrs Pryse, 1821-1822, The parcel contains four smaller packets, labelled ‘London Bills’, which include bills for plants and saddlery; ‘Different Bills’ from Buscot Park, Woodstock, Cardigan and Aberystwyth; ‘Woodstock Bills, including medical bills and a haberdashery account with Sophie Brown; and ‘Shrewsbury Bills’, which also includes bills from London, Gogerddan, Aberystwyth and Woodstock.

Tythin y Penrhin or Glanwern, Caethle and Cefnrhos

Title deeds for the extinction of an existing mortgage and the purchase by William Vaughan of Caethle, of a tenement called Tythin y Penrhin or Glanwern and three parcels of land called Y Fron Coch, Tyr y Ffynon Vawr and Yr Eithinog in the townships of Caethle and Cefnrhos, Tywyn, 1656-1657. They comprise an assignment of the mortgage from John Edward of Cefnrhos (made in 1642/3 by Sir James Pryse late of Ynysymaengwyn), 1656; and a release by Sir Water Lloyd of Llanfair, Cardiganshire, and Bridgett his wife, of the above properties, but also incorporating Maes y Keven, etc. and fishing in the Dyfi (Dovey) to the use of Lewis Lewis of Penmaen, 1657.

Tyn-y-Cae, Pantycalch, Tal-y-bont Mill fields and Tymawr mining leases

Leases by Pryse Loveden and Sir Pryse Pryse respectively to Sir Charles S. Kirkpatrick and Thomas Allwin Readwin, 1851, and to Foster Mortimer of London and Francis Edward Bingley of Tunbridge Wells, 1871, of lead mines under Tyn-y-Cae, Pantycalch, the Mill Fields held with Tal-y-bont Mill, and part of Tymawr, all in the parish of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn.
