Diary with poems,

The diary of Commander George Eyre Powell, R.N., (1790-1855), of Colyton, Devon, 21 Dec. 1810-18 April 1824 and 5 Feb. 1840-22 Aug. 1843. Preceding the diary entries, there are a number of poems in English and one French poem, dated between 1812 and 1824, many of which bear the initials 'G.E.P.'. English; French. XIX cent. A typewritten copy made for George Eyre Evans of the diary of George Eyre Powell, 1810-1843 (NLW MS 13271A, above), together with typewritten copies of letters, dated between 1820 and 1841, from George Eyre Powell to his wife, Catherine, and to his daughter, Ophelia, and from Catherine Powell to her husband, and of testimonials to George Eyre Powell from Captain Edmund Palmer, Admiral Sir Charles Rowley, bart, Sir William Hoste, bart., Captain Herbert Brace Powell, Captain W. Sargent, and Captain F. E. Lock. The original letters and copies of the testimonials are to be found in NLW MS 13563E. Also included are three letters and a receipt, dated 1914, from the Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries to George Eyre Evans concerning the typing of the volume. English. A notebook containing personal memoranda of George Eyre Powell for the years 1811-1813, together with some accounts and part of a diary for the period 27 April 1834 to 24 ?May 1834. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 3.

Diary,

The diary of George Eyre Powell for the period 1 January 1847 to 21 June 1851, written in a volume first used by George Eyre Powell, junior, Honiton, as a note-book in 1836. At the end of the volume there are several loose items, including four receipts, 1854 and 1858, from watchmakers, an undated letter from Rob. B. Evans to Captain George Eyre Powell, and three telegrams, 1923, to George Eyre Evans, &c. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 4.

A volume containing (1) the diary of George Eyre Powell, junior, (1820-1836), son of Commander George Eyre Powell, R.N., and Catherine, his wife, for the period January to 2 July 1836; (2) a letter book, containing copies of letters sent by George Eyre Powell, junior, from Honiton, between 2 May and 3 July 1836, to his father (10), to his grandmother, C. Kingdon (5), to his sister, Lavinia Powell, to an un-named sister, and to his mother, all of Colyton, to F. Wait, esq., Mr. Edward Cornish, the Rev. C. R. Roper, George Hirtzel, esq., and Mr. James Templeton, all of Exeter, to W. Baillio, esq., of Brighton, and to John Melhuish, esq., of Honiton; (3) a list of books including those read 'While at School at Mount Radford'; (4) notes headed 'Memoirs of the Rev. T. Belsham', recording events in the life of Thomas Belsham (1750-1829); and (5) school notes copied from various text-books. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 11.

Charades, riddles etc,

A volume of charades, riddles, enigmas, conundrums and rebuses which belonged to George Eyre Powell, junior, dated 1836, in which the answers to the puzzles are given in shorthand. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 11a.

Memoranda and commonplace book,

A volume containing memoranda, dated 1840-41, of Ophelia Catherine Powell (1823-1866), daughter of George Eyre Powell and Catherine, his wife, afterwards wife of the Rev. Professor David Lewis Evans, and a commonplace book of poetry and some prose items kept by the said Ophelia Powell between January 1843 and July 1854. Other items included in the volume are an incomplete letter, dated at Colyton 20 Dec. 1846, addressed to 'Miss Powell with J.T.'s [?the Rev. James Taplin] affectionate regards', and the substance of a funeral address and a sermon delivered by the Rev. James Taplin in 1845. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 12.

Autograph book,

An autograph album presented to Ophelia Catherine Powell by her sister, Lavinia, on 6 Oct. 1853. The volume contains several pieces of poetry and a hymn transcribed by various members of the Powell family. Much of the volume is blank and six remembrance cards dated 1869-1875 have been inserted onto some of these pages. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 16.

A knitting book describing various patterns, belonging to, and prepared by, Ophelia Catherine Powell in 1854. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 17.

A copy of The Holy Bible ... (London, 1852), presented by George Eyre Powell and Catherine, his wife, to their daughter, Ophelia, on 6 Oct. 1853, in which has been written genealogical memoranda re the Powell and Evans families. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 18.

An autograph album presented to Laura Hirtzel Powell by her sister, Lavinia, on 17 October 1852. The volume contains several pieces of poetry and prose transcribed between 1855 and 1873 by various members of the Powell family and their acquaintances. Also included are printed poetry, dated 1852, obituary notices, dated 1893 and 1897, and seven remembrance cards, dated 1860-1893. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 63.
