Alexander Dalziel: reports and surveys,

Reports and surveys written by Alexander Dalziel, first Secretary of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, comprising an extensive report on the causes, progress and settlement of the colliers' strike of 1871 in South Wales, and detailed manuscript surveys (in 2 volumes) of the Merthyr Vale Colliery made by Dalziel when he took over general managership of the mining and commercial affairs of Messrs Nixon, Taylor, Cory and Company. The surveys contain a series of reports and observations on a wide range of colliery matters, such as underground workings, payment of wages, lamp lighting procedures, the management of collieries in general, housing for miners, ventilation, mineral property belonging to the colliery owners and other major landowners in the area, the nine feet seam at Deep Duffryn Colliery, ventilation at Navigation Colliery, and stable arrangements at various pits. Many drawings, sketches, maps and plans are included in the volumes.

Reports and printed material relating to the Strike of 1893, and the Mines (Eight Hours) Bill which includes an overview of the Bill, the petitions and deputations of the Mining Association of Great Britain, and evidence given by South Wales colliery owners before the Royal Commission on Labour, and extracts of Commission findings. Also, a volume about the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, which includes an historical overview of the formation of the Association and presents copies of key documents in the Association's history including deeds, Sliding Scale Committee agreements and details of disputes, documents relating to the General Strikes of 1871, 1873, 1875, 1879 and 1893, and large sections on Royal Commissions and Acts of Parliament relating to the coal industry.

Four entries for the Mining Section (Arts and Crafts) competition of the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, Cardiff, 1938: two entries on the 'Design of Electrically Driven Direct Haulage to deal with 30 tons of material up a gradient of 1 in 6 at speed of 6 m.p.h.', one by "Tryard" and the other by "Bryngoled"; two entries for a competition for a "Handbook detailing a course of instruction suitable for use in connection with safety classes for Boys in the S.W. Coalfield", one by "Celt o'r Lofa" and the other by "Effort."
