Reports and surveys written by Alexander Dalziel, first Secretary of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, comprising an extensive report on the causes, progress and settlement of the colliers' strike of 1871 in South Wales, and detailed manuscript surveys (in 2 volumes) of the Merthyr Vale Colliery made by Dalziel when he took over general managership of the mining and commercial affairs of Messrs Nixon, Taylor, Cory and Company. The surveys contain a series of reports and observations on a wide range of colliery matters, such as underground workings, payment of wages, lamp lighting procedures, the management of collieries in general, housing for miners, ventilation, mineral property belonging to the colliery owners and other major landowners in the area, the nine feet seam at Deep Duffryn Colliery, ventilation at Navigation Colliery, and stable arrangements at various pits. Many drawings, sketches, maps and plans are included in the volumes.
