Joint Coal Production Committee,

Verbatim minutes of meetings of the Joint Coal Production Committee. This committee met to discuss and agree measures to increase output at individual collieries and to discourage any restrictions of output. They were mainly concerned with ensuring adequate supplies of workmen, materials, machinery, etc., at collieries; with speeding up disputes and settlement processes; and with submitting timely reports to the South Wales District and National Production Council.

General,

Material comprises bound volumes containing generally, minutes of Council meetings of the Monmouthsire and South Wales Coal Owners Association (MSWCOA); minutes of Joint Committee of the MSWCOA; minutes of Sliding Scale Committee meetings; minutes of the General Meetings of the Steam Collieries Defence Association; minutes of committee meetings of the Durham Coal Defence Association. They also contain circulars calling meetings, notices, bills and newspaper cuttings. See file descriptions for details regarding specific items or topics.

Disputes Finality Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Disputes Finality Committee, appointed to consider reports made by committee representatives investigating cases of particular disputes at individual member collieries. Material comprises minutes, which include copies of investigators' reports, agenda and meeting notices.

Departmental committees,

Material relating to cases heard before specific Select and Departmental Committees which were appointed to enquire into a variety of coal industry matters, including the price and availablility of coal, proposed railway legislation, pay and working conditions of miners, and safety conditions in mines.

Commercial Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association Commercial Committee, which dealt with the commercial side of the coal trade. Topics recorded include negotiations with the Coal Controller over the level of coal exports permitted, and schemes for ending government control; the establishment of a standard form for Fuel on Board (F.O.B.) and inland sales; negotiations with various bodies such as the South Wales Shipowners, the Liverpool Shipowners, etc., over standard contracts. The committee also dealt with railway rates, hire charges, transport and shipping facilities within the area, coal trimming and tipping, and co-operation with other exporting districts. Material includes minutes of committee and special meetings, and also notebooks containing shorthand minutes and notes. Minute book no. 7 missing.

Colliery disputes,

Bound volumes providing tabulated information on disputes dealt with by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. Information includes the name and owner of each colliery, the subject of the dispute, the duration of the dispute and any Conciliation Board recommendations. Lists and indexes are also included in this group. See P4/2 for scrapbooks relating to disputes during 1880-1897.

Colliery disputes and strikes,

Material comprises letters, telegrams, newspaper cuttings, statistics, etc., dealing with disputes and strikes at collieries throughout South Wales, together with some details of indemnities paid by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association (MSWCOA) to members involved. Also contains reports of investigations of the disputes by representatives of the MSWCOA and other individuals.

Coal export,

Statistics relating mainly to the export of coal from ports in the United Kingdom to foreign destinations, although figures for coastwise shipments from South Wales ports to other UK ports such as London, Liverpool, Plymouth and Southampton may also be found. The figures mostly concern quantities, value, declared prices, and classes of coal exported.

Coal Dust and General Research Committees,

Material relating to the Coal Dust Research and the General Research Committees of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. Material comprises minutes and research reports. The minutes are mainly for meetings of the Coal Dust Research Committee, which met to receive, and approve, periodic reports of work completed by Dr. T. D. Jones, Director of Research. They contain interim and final reports from Dr. Jones, statements of expenditure for the Coal Dust Research Department, and outlines of future research programmes. The minutes also include several meetings where both the Coal Dust and General Research committees met. Research reports deal with a variety of issues such as air sampling, the use of sprays for dust suppression, ventilation in mines, the effects of various types of conveyors on coal dust, sodium vapour lamps used underground, and pneumokoniosis amongst others.

Coal Cutters and Conveyors Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Coal Cutters and Conveyors Committee, which was appointed by the Owners' representatives of the Conciliation Board to negotiate price lists used for the payment of workmen on the introduction of machine mining, to investigate the question of these price lists at individual collieries, and to advise members in their negotiations for new price lists. Material comprises minutes of meetings and résumés of cases prepared for the meetings.

Coal and transport industries,

Commercial Department files relating to various issues and practices in the coal and transportation industries which affected the Coal Owners Association's interests. Much of the material concerns the transportation of coal by rail and by ship, and the export, import, mechanical and labour issues associated with it. Files may include letters and correspondence, circulars, committee minutes and reports, statistics, and material relating to government rules and regulations.
