Mining Association of Great Britain,

Contemporary statistical reports on the Coal Industry and Coal Trade of numerous foreign countries, which were collated for the Mining Association of Great Britain, and bound as (Foreign) Bulletins. The weekly bulletins are compiled mainly from foreign, particularly Continental, sources such as newspapers, journals, and government reports. Information is given for Germany, France, Poland, Holland, Canada, Russia, Italy, Norway, Belgium, Spain, USA and others. Each volume contains an index which is arranged alphabetically by country, with a secondary classification under the following headings: coal production, costs of production, external trade, internal trade, transport questions, labour, miscellaneous and, where appropriate, iron and steel industries. Bulletins 600-603 were incorrectly numbered as 700-703.

Mechanical and Surface Workers' Conciliation Board,

Transcripts of Mechanical and Surface Workers' Conciliation Board meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Mechanical and Surface Workers' Union. Discussions mainly concerned the clarification of the different classes of workmen (for purposes of representation), the setting up of a joint committee, and a variety of disputes at numerous collieries.

Legal proceedings and reports,

Material relating to legal cases which affected the coal industry in general, and the business interests of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association in particular. Material includes minutes of proceedings, minutes of evidence, judgements, reports, counsel opinions, Enquiry and Committee reports, memoranda and statistical statements.

Joint committees,

Material related to the work of many Coal Owners Association joint committees, including the following: Joint Sliding Scale Committee; Enginemen Wages Committee; Joint Standing Disputes Committee; Enginemen's Association; South Wales Coal Shipment Advisory Committee; South Wales Committee on Physical and Chemical Survey of the National Coal Resources; Joint Committee representing the Safety in Mines Research Board, Colliery Owners, Mining Engineers, Workmen, H.M. Inspector of Mines, Colliery Managers; South Wales Area Committee of the Coal Utilization Council; Disputes Finality Committee and the Joint Coal Production Committee. Material comprises mainly minutes of proceedings, résumés, notices and agenda.

Eight Hours Act,

Material relating to the introduction of the Mines Eight Hours Act in South Wales collieries, the response of various coal companies and miners' organisations to the legislation, and the effects of the Act on the mining industry in Wales. Material comprises reports, counsel's opinions, Conciliation Board sub-committee minutes and extracts of minutes, meeting notes, owners' manifestos, circulars, letters and correspondence, newspaper cuttings, statistical statements and summaries, and some printed material.

Dispute books,

This series comprises volumes tabulating information on disputes dealt with by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association between 1890 and 1946. Volumes D1/1/1-26 note the names of the collieries; the owners of the collieries; the subject of each dispute; the duration of the strike; when each dispute was discussed at Conciliation Board Meetings, together with their recommendations. Volumes D1/1/27-32 tabulate information on specific classes of workmen, and specific subjects. Volumes D1/1/33-35 tabulate information on Stoppages without notice. D1/1/36-37 deal mainly with wage disputes.

Deeds,

Material relating to the foundation of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association (originally called the Aberdare Steam Collieries Association) and the rules and procedures governing its organisation, structure and how it conducted its business. Material comprises Deeds of Association and Deeds of Arrangement.

Commercial Department,

Administrative files created and kept by the Commercial Department of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The department dealt mainly with commercial aspects of coal mining, which included the maintenance and use of railway wagons for coal transport, the negotiation of special railway rates and dock charges for the transport and shipping of coal, the negotiation with foreign countries for the exchange of Welsh coals for pitwood during wartime, the loading of coal and provision of special machinery at docks, compliance with government legislation on the health and safety of miners, negotiations with miners' groups on wages and holidays, and representation in the Mining Association of Great Britain.

Colliery Weighers' Conciliation Board,

Material related to the work of the Colliery Weighers' Conciliiation Board, comprising transcripts of meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Colliery Weighers Association. Discussions relate to disputes over wage rates at particular collieries.

Colliery Officials' Conciliation Board,

Material related to the work of the Colliery Officials' Conciliation Board, comprising minutes of meetings of the Board of Conciliation for the Owners and Officials of Collieries in South Wales and Monmouthshire, and minutes of proceedings of meetings between the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Officials' Association. Matters discussed relate mainly to the stabilisation of wages, holidays, payment of wages during illness and issues involving individual cases of dispute.

Coke-Oven and By-Product Workers' Conciliation Board,

Material related to the work of the Coke-Oven and By-Product Workers' Conciliation Board, comprising minutes of proceedings and awards granted by the Conciliation Board. The Conciliation Board meetings included representatives of the Owners' and Workers' sides of various groups, as follows: representatives from the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Oven and By-Products Works Association and representatives of the National Union of Cokemen and By-Product Workers; representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Oven and By-Product Works Association and of the South Wales Miners' Federation; between representatives of the Disputes Committee of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Ovens and By-Product Works Association; the Monmouthshire and South Wales Cokeowners' Association and the South Wales Miners' Federation; and of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coke Ovens and By-Product Works Association and the South Wales Miners' Federation and the National Union of Cokemen and By-Product Workers. Matters discussed related to topics such as rates of pay and conditions of employment of coke oven and by-product workers in the South Wales coalfield, and also individual claims of workmen employed at various collieries.

Coal Industry National Compensation Tribunal,

Material relating to cases heard before the Coal Industry National Compensation Tribunal, in order to provide compensation for the transfer of assets from district associations to the National Coal Board. Cases include the Mining Association of Great Britain's case before the Coal Industry National Compensation Tribunal, and the case for the Monmouthshire and South Wales District before the Central Valuation Board. Material includes verbatim records of the proceedings before the Board, evidence of witnesses, opening and closing speeches and, in the case of the Monmouthshire and South Wales District Claim, statements of particulars produced by the district Associations of coal owners across Great Britain.

Coal industry and trade statistics,

Material comprises statistical information compiled by several different sources including the Statistical Department of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, the Board of Trade, the Mining Association of Great Britain, and by H.M.'s Inspectors of Mines. The statistics relate to various aspects of the coal mining industry, in particular to United Kingdom trade with foreign countries, the output and distribution of minerals, miners' pay and working conditions, coal export, coal production, and the coal mining and trade industries in general.

Clerks' Joint Wages Board,

Material related to the work of the Clerical Workers' Conciliation Board, comprising verbatim minutes of proceedings between representatives of the Coal Owners Association and representatives of the National Union of Clerks, and some meetings between the Coal Owners Association and the Mining, Clerical and Administrative Workers' Guild. Also included in this series are résumés of joint meetings of Owners and Clerks, which considered individual cases of dispute, and an agreement between the Coal Owners Association and the National Union of Clerks relating mainly to remuneration and conditions of employment of clerical staff at associated collieries.

Circulars,

Series of bound volumes of circulars sent out by the secretaries to members of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, 1891-1955. The circulars are mainly of a routine nature, comprising notices of meetings of the various committees of the Association, Revision of Assurance notices and forms, results of Sliding Scale audits and subscription reminders. Some circulars were sent to members for specific purposes, e.g. to elicit information to be used in Sliding Scale Agreement negotiations, to elicit support for the Talygarn Convalescent Home, etc. The last 12 volumes in the series (P1/39-52) contain circulars sent by the secretaries to members of the Commercial Committee, 1919-1947.

Cash books,

Volumes which record the monies paid into, and out of, the Association's accounts. Most of the volumes in this series contain entries for the Indemnities and Expenses Account, giving details such as the name of the colliery or railway company, the amount of money paid into the account, the amount paid out and to whom, and a description of the expenditure. Many cash books provide account summaries and in some instances signed balance sheets.
