The discussions relate mainly to the political and diplomatic state of Europe, especially France, Britain, Austria, Italy, Russia, Turkey and Germany. There are also comments on art; Gladstone's budget; Garibaldi's invasion of Sicily; military matters; the Papacy; Tocqueville's letters, etc.
