Pyrenees journal

Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to the Pyrenees, by way of Paris, 27 July-30 October 1849. The political situation in France and the rest of Europe is discussed with: Tocqueville; Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869); George Bancroft (1800-91); Normanby; Charles Dunoyer (1786-1862); Edward Twisleton (1809-74);. Sir James Lewis Knight-Bruce (1791-1866); Sir Richard Malins (1805-82); Faucher; Guilhaud de Lavergne (1809-80); Pierre Dumon (1797-1870); Auguste Chevalier, et al. There are extracts from Marshal Bugeaud's memoir of the events of 1848 and lengthy descriptions of the Pyrenees and S's journey through France.

The major topic of conversation is the political situation of France, with comments on the financial state of France; repression and corruption; the possibility of an European war and an invasion of England; possible successors to Louis Napoleon; Louis Napoleon's marriage; politics in England; Cuba and USA; the 'education of young ladies'; and military leaders.

It includes conversations with Walne; Lesseps; Edhem Pasha (1815-90); Linant Bey; Gisborne; Bruce; Hekekian Bey; Mougel Bey; Said Pasha; Clot Bey; Cahil Effendi et al. There are conversations on the Suez Canal; Mehemet Ali; religion; and life in Egypt. Included is a copy of a letter from Francis Gisborne to Lord Canning, dated 20 February 1856, relating to the Eastern Telegraph Company.
