Miscellanea of 'Myrddin Fardd',

A notebook largely in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing biographical data (Sion Robert Lewis, nat 1731; John Evans, bishop of Bangor; John Elias 'o Fon', etc.), memorial inscriptions and details of the writer's holdings of Golud yr Oes.

A collection of holograph letters and a few transcripts of letters and literary documents. The correspondents include John Williams, Ynys y Towyn and Tuhwntirbwlch [Portmadoc] to John Thomas ['Siôn Wyn o Eifion'], Chwilog, 1815-48 (18) (personal, observations on friendship, etc., the death of the recipient's father, the extension of the writer's business and the establishment of a benefit club, claims on the writer's liberality, the destruction of corn by the weather, references to mutual friends, the recipient's reading, the health of the recipient's nephew, improvements at 'our little Salem' (Congregational meeting-house], the recipient's 'domestic concerns', attachment to Mr [William] Ambrose ['Emrys'], the death of Mrs [Henrietta] Nanney, the writer's life story, the need for education facilities, news of the writer's family and of friends, etc.), Willm. Beirniadaeth' (by T. Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil), 'Sion Philip, Mochras', 'The British Kymry .... By the Rev. R. W. An imperfect manuscript of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing writings on the antiquities, ecclesiastical history, etc. of Llŷn, a list of high sheriffs of Caernarvonshire, 1540-1793, and miscellaneous press cuttings. A label on the outer upper cover is lettered 'E'.

Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon,

An album lettered 'Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon' and labelled 'I' from the library of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing press cuttings with annotations and some additions by the compiler.

The titles include 'Anerchiad Llewelyn Williams oddiar y Maen Llog, Mehefin 17eg 1909', 'Hen Hymnau', 'Hanes Blaenywaun. Gan B. Rees, YH' (review by J. Spinther James), 'Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Caernarfon, Nadolig, 1902' (adjudication by J. A collection largely of printed matter from the library of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including prospectuses of his Gleanings from God's Acre (Pwllheli, 1903), Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon (Caernarfon, 1922) and 'The Works of Bards of Llyn and Eifionydd'; a printed copy review (o'r "Drych") of Enwau Lleoedd Sir Gaernarfon (Caernarfon, [1913]); press cuttings, with some annotations, entitled 'Hela hen Eiriau' (by [J. Spinther James] 'Spinther'), 'George Borrow,' 'Edward Ellis, Dinbych' (by John Edwards, Rosendale, Wis.), 'William W. Lewis, Ysw.' (of Cincinnati, Ohio), 'Hen Farddoniaeth y Cymry' (by [David Davies] 'Dewi Emlyn', Parisville, Ohio), etc.; extracts from the parish register, with copies of the principal monumental inscriptions in the church and churchyard, of Criccieth, and extracts from the registers of Ynyscynhaiarn, both in the county of Carnarvon (7pp.); and An Historical Chart, representing in a Chronological series, the Rise, Revolutions and Fall of the Principal Empires of the World (London, 1795).

Scrap-book of 'Myrddin Fardd',

A scrap-book of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') lettered 'Cadw mi gei'. The manuscript items include a list in the hand of 'Myrddin Fardd' of family mottoes of North Wales interest; English translations by Henry W[illia]m Hewlett, 34 Great James Street, Bedford Row [London], c.1827-8, and Welsh translations by 'Myrddin Fardd', c. 1876-8, of public records relating to Pwllheli and Criccieth; glossaries by 'Myrddin Fardd' of Welsh words (e.g. obscure words, flower names); an explanatory list by 'Myrddin Fardd' of Caernarvonshire place-names; entries by 'Myrddin Fardd' of sales by him of manuscripts to D. G. Goodwin, Salop, 1893, and to J. H. Davies, Cwrt Mawr, 1899-1900; entries by 'Myrddin Fardd' of births, deaths and burials of members of his family; and a holograph 'englyn' ('Beddargraff Owen Jones (Manoethwy)') by E[llis] O[wen], Cefnymeusydd, 1866. The press cuttings cover a wide range of Welsh literary and antiquarian interests and include portraits of Welsh celebrities, prospectuses and reviews of publications by 'Myrddin Fardd', prospectuses of Arwest Farddol Glan Geirionydd, 1880, 1888-9, fragments of Y Beibl Cyssegr-Lan (1588), being the first complete Welsh translation of the Bible (with notes by 'Myrddin Fardd' on the disposal of two copies of this edition of the Bible once in his possession), etc. The volume is numbered '1' on the upper cover and on the upper end-paper.

Holograph poetical compositions, including drafts, by William Morgan Williams ('Fferyllfardd'; 1832-77), among them 'Hiraeth y Bardd am Gymru' ('Y Llyfr Cyntaf' and 'Yr Ail Lyfr'), 'Awdl Gynghaneddol', an 'awdl' on 'Anian yn ei Phrydferthwch yn Datgan Gogoniant Duw', a Welsh translation of ['Safe in the arms of Jesus'], and 'englynion', etc. on various subjects. One notebook contains early items, 1848-50, by 'Fferyllfardd', together with items by W. Williams, Pwllheli [(?) 'Gwilym Heli', father of W. M. Williams ('Fferyllfardd')], including a transcript of 'Anerchiad at Dafydd Owain or Gaerwen neu Dewi Wynn of Eifion Pan yn byw yn Mhwllheli yn y flwyddyn 1826'. There are also a few press cuttings and a draft of a presidential address. The wrapping paper bears the words 'Gweithiau Fferyll-fardd. I'w Hadolygu - Gan Myrddin Fardd.'

Material relating to Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon, etc.,

A few loose sheets in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing material to be found in Enwau Lleoedd Sir Gaernarfon: eu hystyr a'u hanes (Caernarfon, 1913) and Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon (Caernarfon, 1922). There is also a printed order form for Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon, issued while 'Myrddin Fardd' was still alive.

Catalogue of Welsh ballads,

An interleaved volume (385 pp.) belonging to J. H. Davies made up of pages from Y Traethodydd, 1886-92 ('Hen Gerddi y Cymry', a catalogue of Welsh ballads compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with pages 346-50 from Revue Celtique, II (part of a supplement [by D. Davies, including cross-references to his own Bibliography of Welsh ballads printed in the 18th century (London, 1911) and an index to the authors, etc. of the pre-1800 ballads in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue. The numbers used in the index correspond to the numbers in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue while the page references are to the pages in the present volume. Loose inside are a list of ballads, etc. by Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant'), Hugh Jones, Llangwm and Ellis Roberts, with number or page references as before, and a letter, 1908, from D. Rhys Phillips, Swansea to [J. H. Davies] (jottings on three Shrewsbury 'effusions').

Hen Benillion,

Two copies, the second incomplete, of a collection of 'Hen Benillion' compiled probably by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The first copy (not in the autograph of' Myrddin Fardd' except for some alterations and additions) appears to be part (pp. 494-573) of a larger work and is headed "Pen. XIV - Crynodeb o Hen Bennillion Gwerinol' (the word 'diardd[el]' has been added to the title at a later date). The second copy is in the autograph of 'Myrddin Fardd' and is earlier in date but the beginning and end are wanting and the section here (pp. 29-72) corresponds to pp. 523-566 in the other copy. Between these two copies is a printed article by E. Anwyl, Oxford on 'Penillion telyn y Cymry' [Y Geninen, 1891], pp. 251-4.
