Wrexham title deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties in the parish of Wrexham, mainly belonging to Sir John Wynn of Watstay, with later leases by the Williams Wynn family. The files describe miscellaneous deeds for properties in Wrexham, 1293-1464, 1617-1772; Stansty, 1578-1727; deeds of Parke y Llys and the Hanson family, 1579-1697; Wrexham Abbot, 1648, 1702, 1708; Esclusham, 1648, 1691, 1773; Bersham, 1692-1695; Abenbury, 1701-1782; and Bryn y Ffynnon Hall in Wrexham Regis and Wrexham Abbot, 1713-1848.

Thirty seven charters of the Abbey of Ystrad Marchell near Welshpool, dating from 1183 to 1529, together with three Elizabethan inspeximus of the earlier charters, 1577-1588/9. The original foundation charter of c. 1170 is missing, but copies have survived in TNA and in the Wynnstay Estate Records at NLW. Twelve of the charters comprise grants and sales by Gwenwynwyn ap Owain of lands in the commote of Cyfeiliog, the hundred of Arwystli and the manor of Caereinion Uwch Coed, 1185-1215. Other documents in the Wynnstay archive include six grants by members of the former ruling elite of Arwystli [c. 1195]-1215; several grants of lands or pasturage rights in Penllyn and Edeirnion, Mochnant, Montgomery, Caledffrwd and Bachwilym; confirmations by King John, 1200, and Edward de Charleton, 1420, of previous grants; conveyances by Llywelyn Fawr, [1209] and his son, Gruffudd, 1226; records of disputes between the abbeys of Ystrad Marchell and Cwm Hir over lands in Arwystli, [c. 1216], 1227; a mandate of Anian, bishop of St Asaph, [1268x1292]; confirmation of a grant by John de Charleton of the abbot’s right to hold a court of his tenants, 1367; leases of lands in Arwystli by two of the abbots, 1490-1529; and a single charter of Owain ap Madog granting land in Dinmael to Valle Crucis Abbey, 1207.

Montgomeryshire deeds,

Twelve deeds, 1302/3, 1537-1675/6, the majority of which relate to the manors or lordships of Mechain Is Coed and Uwch Coed, Caereinion, Mochnant, Mawddwy, Cyfeiliog, Talerddig and Arwystli. Two of the deeds, 1302 and 1588, appear to have originated from the manor of Caus. The Vaughan family is strongly represented and the series includes settlements of the Llwydiarth estate, 1538, and the manor of Talerddig, 1673-1675/6, involving John ap Howell Vychan and Edward Vaughan respectively. Among witnesses named in the deeds is Richard Herbert, seneschal of Powys, 1537-1538.

Bala Lake deeds,

Two deeds, 1570-1572, recording the conveyance of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid or Pimbremear), ultimately to the existing tenant, Howell Vaughan of Llanuwchllyn. The lake and its surrounds lay in the territory of Penllyn once owned by Ystrad Marchell Abbey and appropriated by the Crown after the dissolution. The deeds recite a grant by Queen Elizabeth in 1569/70 and the names of successive owners, London gentlemen, the last of whom conveyed the property to Vaughan; it then formed part of the Glan-llyn estate. Both deeds were contained in an envelope [c. 1945]

Caern, and property in p's Eglwys-bach, Llangernyw, Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Betws Abergele, Llandrillo-yn-Rhos (ii) Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward B, comprising property in p's Dwygyfylchi, Llanfair-fechan, Llanberis, Penmorfa, Beddgelert, Dolwyddelan, Capel Curig, Penmachno; (iii) Glasinfryn and Gwydir Estates, comprising properties in p's Conwy (t. Y Gyffin), Clynnog, Llanberis, [Waun-fawr formerly Llanbeblig] (t. Treflan), Pwllheli, Llanfair-is-gaer, Llanrug, Bangor, and Caernarfon town, all co. Caern, and in p. Llysfaen, co. Denb. Manor of Cyfeiliog

Manor of Cyfeiliog comprises (i) Mathafarn estate, property in p's Llanwrin, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Machynlleth, Penegoes and Cemais, co. Mont.; (ii) Rhiwsaeson estate, comprising property in p. Llanbryn-mair, co. Mont.; (iii) Tirymynech estate, comprising property in p's Penegoes, Machynlleth, Llanbryn-mair, Cemais, Llanwrin and Darowen, co. Mont. L1256 contains a rental, 1831, of cottages in the Manor of Cyfeiliog, including in p's Llanbryn-mair, [t. Tirymynech,] Cemais, Llanwrin, Darowen, Machynlleth and Penegoes, co. Mont. Property in p. Mallwyd, co. Mer., taken from the Glan-llyn agency, are contained in most volumes from R93 (1838) onwards. Collectors: Rev. John Davies, 1809-1816, Samuel Hughes, 1816-1834, David Jones, 1835-1857, Joseph Owen Jones, 1857-1861. After 1861, the properties (except for property in p. The estate comprises property in p's Wrexham, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, ?Llangwyfan, [Llansilin] (t. Sycharth), and [Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant] (t. Cefn-coch), all in co. Denb., and in p. Stanwardine collection

Property in Stanwardine, [p. Baschurch], co. Shrop., and p. Holt, co. Denb. From R10/1 (1707) onwards, property in p's Wrexham and Broughton is added; from R10/9 (1712) onwards, property in p. Is-y-Coed, previously contained in the Wynnstay Home Rents Collection, is also added. R9/6a and R9/6b contain property in Holt only. Chwaen Isaf estate

This is the ancestral estate of the Williamses of Chwaen Isaf, co. Ang., inherited by Sir William Williams (d. 1700). It comprised property in p's Llantrisant, Llanfihangel [Tre'r Beirdd?], Llechylched, Llanfaelog, Trewalchmai, Llanrhuddlad, Llaneilian, Llandrygarn, Llangristiolus, Llandysilio, Penmynydd, Pentraeth, Beaumaris, Llanwenllwyfo, Amlwch and Llan-faes, all in co. Ang. The estate disappears from the rentals after 1692.

Llwydiarth estate

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (d. 1749) acquired the Llwydiarth estate in 1715 through his marriage with Ann, daughter and heiress of Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth. The rents of the estate are divided into the following collections: (1) Llanfihangel collection, (2) Mochnant collection, (3) Llangedwyn collection, and (4) Llanfair collection. Arranged into the Llanfihangel, Mochnant, and Llangedwyn collections as one entity; and the Llanfair collection on its own as another. Post 1772, the collections continue as follows: Llanfihangel collection to Collection III; Mochnant collection to Collection I; Llangedwyn collection to Collections I and IV; Llanfair collection (co. Mont.) to Collection III; Llanfair collection (p. Mallwyd, co. Mer.) to Collection I.
