A file of depositions of witnesses in the suit in the Council in the Marches of Wales, between William Powell, esq., complainant, and William Thomas, gent., defendant, containing:. (I) Depositions on behalf of complainant at the church of Newchurch, 5 December 1604, before George Morgan and John Williams, Commissioners: (a) Henrye George of Llansoy, yeoman (70) with other went to complainant and defendant to make conclusion and agreement between them and by enreaty brought them together near plaintiff's dwelling house in Llansoy and it was fully agreed that defendant should assure and release the premises to complainant and was present on the premises when defendant by "sprigge and turff" executed livery and seisin to complainant, which was done by word of mouth and by no writing. Also agreed that complainant should release defendant of all former debts and gave him a 21 years lease, at yearl rent of £3, defendant to do suit of mill. Defendant had made default of the £3 rent and all other duties. (b) Thomas Reynolds, of town of Chepstowe, yeoman, (75) was told by an honest woman of the town of Chepstowe who had heard in the town of Ragland, that defendant intended on the Feast of the Purification to go to the church of Wolffesnewton, with many persons in his company including two from out of the county of Glamorgan, and defendant was asked by complainant to come to the church yard or church porch of Wolffesnewton at the intended time and he was there with the complainant's friends in company when defendant and his friends came armed. Defendant used to the complainant divers ill and indecent speeches, defendant did not show, tell or number any money, but he did show a bag. (c) Lewis Thomas of the parish of Langoven, yeoman, (60). David Thomas of Llangoven, yeoman (40), was requested by complainant to be at the parish church of Wolffesnewton to bear witness that there should be no injury or harm offered complainant by defendant.
