Rentals

Rentals of the Badminton estate in Wales, or at least in two of the three Welsh cos where the estate was located. Some rentals which relate to the Badminton estate in both England and Wales were returned by NLW to the Badminton estate office in 1988. BA1/8-10 include details of receipts from sales of wood, bark and coal, and of disbursements, including land tax, repairs, servants' wages, election expenses in Swansea, 1745-6, co. Brec., 1753-4, Cardiff, 1754, and allowances for the 11 days 'lost' when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in place of the Julian calendar, 1753-4. Three of these rentals (BMA1/1-2, 5) were exhibited in the Courts of Exchequer and Chancery in 1727 and 1731 respectively in a dispute between Henry, duke of Beaufort, infant, complainant, and John Scott and William Dunwoodie, gent's, defendants, and between Henry, duke of Beaufort, complainant, and Mathew Powell, esq., defendant.

Bailiffs' accounts

There are no bailiffs' accounts for the entire Badminton estate in Wales. What is included here is a copy account of the estate in co. Mon., co. Glam. and various parts of the estate in England.

Audit books,

The audit books record payments by tenants of their annual rent. BMB1/1 is arranged by tenant; BMB1/2 by date of payment. See also BMS for details of rent received on audit days.

Statements of accounts including statements of rents received on audit days, statements of total rents received including cos Glam., and Brec., Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, cash accounts, bills received, land taxes allowed, payments made, canal shares, rents received for forges and lands from Harford, Partridge & co., timber sold, repairs, disbursements, contingency bills of expenses, together with receipts, lists of vouchers delivered and related correspondence.

Accounts including accounts of rents received on audit days, cash accounts, accounts of steward with the estate, accounts relating to coal supplied to the furnaces at Clydach, Beaufort and Rumney, contingency bills of steward's expenses, together with instructions for leases to be granted, lists of leases granted and fees to the steward for executing the same, and related correspondence.

Rent arrears accounts,

Accounts of rent arrears, 1669-1766, on the co. Mon. estate, arranged by individual manors (BMC1), parts of the co. Mon. estate (BMC2) and all the co. Mon. estate apart from the manors of Maindiff and Three Castles and Whitecastle which were the responsibility of the receiver for the co. Brec. and co. Glam. estates (BMC3). BMC4 comprises a stray volume from the estate of the earl of Pembroke, parts of which were later purchased by the Badminton estate in 1722. Steward's accounts,

Account books of the steward giving details of receipts, mainly rents, and of disbursements, including repairs, rates, poor rates, court leets, subscriptions and wages and salaries to labourers, servants, gamekeepers, craftsmen, etc.

Rentals of the co. Glam. estate in lp Gower, comprising man's Gower Anglica and Gower Wallica, Swansea, Lougher, Trewyddfa, [p. Swansea], Pennard, [p. Pennard], Lunnon, [p. Ilston], Kittle, [p's Pennard/ilston], in p's Bishopstown and Oystermouth, man. Kilvey, [p. Llansamlet] and, in BGA1/5 only, in p's Llandeilo Tal-y-bont, Llangiwg, Llanrhidian, Llangennith and Llanddewi [Gwyr]. The rentals are arranged as follows: occasional rentals (first series), [pre-1625]-1711 (BGA1), loose sheets of collector's rentals (second series), 1714-33, (BGA2), receiver's copy of rentals (third series), 1732-43 (BGA3), and main series of (audited) rentals, 1760-1931. Some of the gaps in BGA1-4 are supplemented by rentals in BA 1/6-11.

Accounts of rent arrears submitted by Silvanus Bevan, collector of rents of the co. Glam. estate in lp Gower, comprising man's Gower Anglica and Gower Wallica, Swansea, Lougher, Trewyddfa, [p. Swansea], Pennard, [p. Pennard], Lunnon, [p. Ilston], Kittle, [p's Pennard/ilston], and in p's Bishopstown and Oystermouth, man. Kilvey, [p. Llansamlet]. All of these accounts were removed from Badminton (Group 2); the previous reference numbers are given below.

Accounts of rent arrears

No accounts of rent arrears exist for the entire Badminton estate in Wales. What is included here are accounts of arrears for the estate in at least two Welsh cos. From at least 1740 until 1760, responsibility for accounting and collecting rent arrears (and rents) was divided between the receivers of the estate in co. Brec., co. Glam. and man. Maindiff and Whitecastle in co. Mon., (but see BC 2 and BMC 3), and the remainder of the co. Mon. estate, together with man. Woolaston and Tidenham in Gloucestershire. The former accounts are included here, the latter with arrears for individual co. Mon. man's and for parts of the co. Mon. estate at BMC 1-2.

Rentals,

The rentals are arranged into six series: individual/groups of man's, first series, second series, main series, port of Chepstow and miscellaneous.

Registers of leases,

Registers of leases of the co. Brec. estate in man's Crickhowell and Tretwr giving date of grant of lease, term of lease, name of lessee and of lives of lease, annual rent, amount of fines and heriots, and descriptions of the premises. Many of the entries in BBP1/1-6 are duplicated.
