Statistical information produced by, or collected by, the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association relating to all aspects of the coal trade, both within the United Kingdom and in other countries across the world. Material comprises bound volumes of tabulated information regarding the UK and international coal industries, international trade, wage rates for miners, colliery price lists, annual summaries of Association members, revisions of Assurances, and statistics on the coal trade of foreign countries.

Records of a variety of conciliation boards, including the Board of Conciliation for the Coal Trade of Monmouthshire and South Wales and the National Conciliation Board for the Coalmining Industry, which were established to deal with disputes at the various collieries associated with the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association (MSWCOA). Also the records of the three district boards under MSWCOA (Cardiff, Swansea and Newport) as well as the records of the many committees which oversaw the activities of the MSWCOA.

Material relating to the foundation of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, and material relating to legal cases the Association members were involved with or that affected the interests of the Association as a whole, in particular, those relating to railway rates and charges. These cases were heard before several courts and tribunals including the High Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal, the House of Lords, the House of Commons, the Court of Enquiry, Select and Departmental Committees, Royal Commissions, the Railway Rates Tribunal and the Coal Industry National Compensation Tribunal.

Despite a political career spanning a decade and more, the group consists of comparatively few papers confined basically to the general elections of 1774-1775, and the Parliamentary enquiry of 1772-1773.
