Valor ecclesiasticus

A manuscript containing the names of all rectories 'in the kingdom of England and Calais and the Marches thereof' of the annual value of over £10, arranged in dioceses, deaneries and counties, followed by the names of all vicarages in England, Wales and the Marches of the annual value of over £10, similarly arranged, all having been transcribed from the Liber Regis in the First Fruits and Tenths Office.

Transcripts and extracts

One of forty-one volumes containing transcripts of, and extracts from, parish registers and bishops' transcripts of parish registers principally from Monmouthshire, in the autograph of Bradney, with several insets in the autographs of John Hobson Matthews (Monmouth), Francis Green (St Davids), John Davies (Aberystwyth) and others. This volume contains transcripts and extracts from the parish registers of Panteg, 1598-1785; Llanishen, 1601-1775; Llanllowell, 1664-1762; Llangibby, 1678-1806; Llangoven, 1691-1745; Llanvapley, 1699-1812; Goytrey, 1700-1778; Trostrey, 1723-1811; Pen-y-clawdd, 1728-1806; Bettws Newydd, 1736-1810; and Oldcastle, 1794-1836.

Flintshire Place-names

An essay by Thomas Edwards on 'Flintshire Place-names', with numerous emendations and additions by the author and others. The preface is dated March 1909, and an accompanying autograph letter, dated 10 October 1910, from W. H. Evans, Sons & Co., The Farmers' Herald Office, Chester, to the author, contains an estimate of the cost of the proposed publication of the volume.

Bangor Bishopric foreshore rights,

Letter (17 pp.), 1885, from W. J. Hardy, Chancery Lane, London, outlining the result of searches carried out among records at the Public Record Office (now The National Archives), Lambeth Palace, and the British Museum, concerning the Bishop of Bangor's foreshore rights, including wreck of the sea, within all his manors and lands. Also included are extracts from, and abstracts of, documents, 1284-1715, from the three repositories; together with an abstract of a report entitled 'Bangor Bishoprick Estates. Foreshores and Waste Lands', prepared by H. W. Hewlett in 1866.

An account book, 1760-1763, of a brewer [? at Caernarfon] dealing mainly with Anglesey and Caernarvonshire customers; the volume was later used as an arithmetic and geometry exercise book, probably by Roberts.

The Arts in Wales,

Mainly manuscript and typescript notes, 1970-1987, prepared by Sir Goronwy Daniel for addresses and speeches on themes relating to the arts in Wales, together with a small quantity of related printed items and press cuttings. The file also contains notes for an address on 'Yr Ieuanc a Disgyblaeth Heddiw' delivered by Sir Goronwy at Cyfundeb Annibynwyr Penfro, 16 July 1980.

Cuttings on the Aberfan disaster,

The file comprises various newspaper and magazine cuttings, [Oct.] 1966-Dec. 1967, some in photocopied form, concerning the disaster at Aberfan on 21 October 1966, including cuttings regarding the subsequent public inquiry at Merthyr Tydfil, as reported in both the national and local press, as well as articles from the Colliery Guardian. Also included are some pages from a glossy magazine showing pictures of the scene immediately following the tragedy.

The Wooden Doctor,

A volume containing an early manuscript draft, [c. 1932], by Margiad Evans of her second novel, The Wooden Doctor (Oxford, 1933), here entitled 'A Divine Image', and containing material not included in the published text. The volume was originally in the possession of the geologist and palaeontologist Robert Etheridge and contains notes by him, 1854, on lead mining in Cardiganshire (ff. 242 verso-244).
