Note
Under various acts of Parliament loans were made available to individual landowners for improvements to settled estates, such as drainage, buildings, embankments and enclosures. The loans were made through four companies: the General Land Drainage and Improvement Company, the Land Loan and Enfranchisement Company, the Lands Improvement Company and the Scottish Drainage and Improvement Company. The Land Loan and Enfranchisement Company was amalgamated later with the Lands Improvement Company [?c.1898]. Registers of the loans were kept by the Inclosure Commissioners. They also advanced money directly out of Exchequer funds.
