Biographical history
Lady Gertrude Maud Carter ('Gertrude Painter') (1893-1974), was a dramatist and novelist. She was the only daughter of Walter Edward Painter and married Sir Archibald Carter (1887-1958) in 1923. Her published works included the novel Tillage of the Poor (London, 1926) and her plays included 'The Snow Storm' and 'The Kite's Feather'.

Papers, mainly literary, of Gertrude Painter, 1925-1986, including typescripts of the plays 'The White Colt' or 'The Snow Storm', 'The Kite's Feather' and 'The Tramp', [1926]-[1963]; a copy of the novel Tillage of the Poor (1926); an unpublished typescript, 'David, King of Aberithon', [1920s]; letters, 1925-1926, 1973; press-cuttings, 1926-1967; programmes, 1946-1967; autobiographical notes, 1972, and additional notes by Nancy Osborne, 1986; an annotated copy of Some Contemporary Anglo-Welsh Writers (Cardiff, 1951).
