Biographical history

E. G. Bowen (Emrys George Bowen) (1900-1983) was born at Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, and graduated from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1923, with first class honours in Geography. He then studied for a Masters degree (1926). After becoming Cecil Prosser Research Fellow at the Welsh National School of Medicine, he returned to Aberystwyth as an assistant lecturer, becoming Gregynog Professor of Geography and Anthroplogy in 1946 until his retirement in 1968. On his retirement, he lectured on church history. He was deeply interested in historical geography and settlement studies. His first published book was Wales, A Study in Geography and History (1941). His writings covered geography, archaeology, history (especially proto-history of the Dark Ages), culture and society of Wales.

The file comprises card index entries covering Condry's own writing, photographs, bibliographies and other literary sources, birds, fish, animals, insects, plants, trees, habitats, climate, important figures such as George Borrow and Thoreau, and places of interest, with a section specifically about Ynys-hir. Some notes are quite detailed, accompanied by relevant cuttings and correspondence, which includes letters from Prof. E. G. Bowen, 1982, regarding St Beuno and Bardsey, Arthur Chater, 1963, 1992, on history books of Welsh interest and a plant species, Pip Miles on entomology, 1958, 1975, Derek [Ratcliffe], 1981, mainly concerning peregrine falcons, H. R. H. ('Taff') Vaughan, 1976-1977, on the history of local industries, and Irene ('Benjamin') Vaughan (1976), on the wild service tree.
