George Gilbert Treherne Treherne, solicitor and antiquarian, was born George Gilbert Treherne Thomas and educated at Eton before entering Balliol College, Oxford in 1857. It was soon after he left Oxford that he changed his surname. He qualified as a solicitor in 1865 and became head of his own firm. As his legal work concentrated mainly on the major estates of south-west Wales, Treherne became especially interested in Laugharne and the surrounding areas, particularly its historical and antiquarian aspects. He published two books on Cymyn Church in South Carmarthenshire, namely Eglwys Cymmin, The Story of an Old Welsh Church (1918) and Eglwys Cymmin Epitaphs (1920). In 1904 Treherne became a member of the Antiquarian Society of Wales, contributing regularly to the Society's annual periodical Archaeologia Cambrensis. The following year he was one of the founders of the Carmarthenshire Antiquarian Society; he became its first President and contributed some twenty-five articles to the Society's transactions. Treherne died at his home in Ringmer, Sussex in 1923.
