A note, [late 15 cent. x early 16 cent.], by a reader on f. 58, partly erased, ending 'xxxx dominus meus', is accompanied by nine notes of music on four staves; also perhaps by the same hand is erased writing on f. 68 verso. On f. 29 is a note in an italic hand, [16 cent, second ½]; the numbering of the psalms is of about the same date. On f. 69, 'σαλτα Ro: Hyd', [late 16 cent. x early 17 cent.], and 'Tho[mas] Hughes' in a legal hand, [?18 cent.]. Perhaps to be identified with MS 26, 'Theologica quaedam. Vell. fol.' in Thomas Phillipps's 1837 printed catalogue of the Porkington manuscripts; MS 16 on the spine and in the revised versions of Phillipps's catalogue (Brogyntyn MS I.23 and NLW MS 1197A), and in the Second Report of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts (London, 1874).

The Explanatio in Psalmos attributed to Haimo of Halberstadt (ff. 1-68 verso), here imperfect by the loss of a quire at the beginning: ']ipse semper est rex iudeorum ... et corpore spirituali et subtili'. The text, corresponding to Migne, Patrologia Latina cxvi, cols. 237-693, begins in the commentary on Psalm 15 and, unaccountably, breaks off at the foot of the first column of f. 68 verso, where the remaining column would have sufficed to complete the commentary on Psalm 150. Written in England, the manner of writing in omissions and the 'dragon initials', but not the script, are suggestive of Canterbury or Rochester.
Written by one good hand. Punctuation by point and punctus elevatus; hyphens. Ink brown. Omissions are regularly made good by writing in small in the margin with a signe-de-renvoi, sometimes by the scribe, sometimes by another hand, sometimes, otiosely, by both (cf. N. R. Ker, English Manuscripts in the Century after the Norman Conquest (Oxford, 1960), p. 50). Nota marks are by the scribe. Spaces for tituli, at least up to f. 45, were originally left blank, perhaps to be filled in in red; they were later filled in in ink, by the scribe, in capitals. Between ff. 21 verso and 45, tituli, written small, now partly cropped, appear in the outer margin.

Collation: 1-3 (8), 4 (8) (4 and 5 singletons, stubs after ff. 27 and 28), 5-8 (8), 9 uncertain, five leaves, two stubs after f. 66 but no loss of text. No signatures or catchwords.

Decoration: For psalms 51, 101, 109 and 142 (ff. 21 verso, 45, 52 and 65 verso), 'dragon initials' (see Charles Reginald Dodwell, The Canterbury School of Illumination, 1066-1200 (Cambridge, 1954), p. 11), in red and/or green on blue ground, of five to seven lines. The most elaborate, on f. 65 verso, is close to Dodwell, plate 9(d), but simpler. For other psalms, initials of two or three lines in red, blue or green, either plain or with arabesques in one or both of the contrasting colours. On f. 18 verso a wyvern in the margin has its mouth to the extending tongue of an initial D.
