Cyfres GBJ1 - Enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno: acts, papers, letters, etc.

Papers concerning the enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno (Borth Bog) in the lordship of Genau’r-glyn, 1743-1899, with particular reference to the enclosure acts of 1813 and 1824. There is evidence of local opposition from proprietors who previously had rights of common on Cors Fochno. Documents and letters describe the construction of the Dovey embankment from 1816, the alleged negligence by the contractors resulting in an action in the Court of the Exchequer, and the misuse of the bank as a thoroughfare. Other subjects include the diversion of the river Leri, drainage at Ynysfergi and flood prevention at Borth. The majority of the document bundles appear to be original and are miscellaneous in content. They include the acts of Parliament for enclosing lands in the townships of the parishes of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, cases and legal opinions thereon; enclosure awards; and reports by the enclosure commissioners and land surveyors, Anthony Bower of Lincoln and William Jones of Bangor. There are also public notices of meetings and allotment sales; specifications, estimates and accounts for the drainage work and embankments; agreements between the enclosure commissioners and contractors; letters to Pryse Pryse, Pryse Loveden, Sir Pryse Pryse and their agents; depositions of witnesses; petitions and letters appealing for flood defences at Borth; and maps.
