Scope and content

The series comprises letters, mainly by John Fleet, head of the secretariat of the Cornish Bureau for European Relations (CoBER), to individuals, including Lord St Levan, Jane Lofthouse, Sir Russell Johnston, Sebastian Coe, Paul Tyler, Robin Teverson, Mark Killilea, other members of Parliament and the European Parliament, and to officials of Cornwall County Council, Groundwork Kerrier, the Institute of Cornish Studies, Bredereth Sen Jago, the Council of Europe, The European Centre for Traditional and Regional Cultures (ECTARC), the European Commission, the European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages, the church and the press. The main subjects are: administration within Cowethas Flamank and CoBER; relationships with local government; a petition to the European Parliament to gain official recognition of Cornwall's national identity, language and heritage, with hopes for funding and a proposed Cornish cultural centre; misrepresentation of CoBER's motives; links with the European Parliament's Intergroup on Minority Languages and Cultures; the place of Cornwall in the broader European cultural tradition; heritage and tourism initiatives, such as Cornwall's participation in the Council of Europe cultural routes programme; social and economic problems affecting railways, industries and old age pensioners; rugby; music; the Cornish Gorsedd; development of the CoBER library; and organisation of the Cornish local authority system. All files contain enclosures of press cuttings, circulars, printed pamphlets, reports, articles, minutes of meetings and notes describing the work of CoBER.
