Catalogue of Glanrheidol and Llidiardau libraries,

  • NLW MS 23576D.
  • File
  • [c. 1820], 1856-1866 /

A volume containing a catalogue of the books, paintings and sculptures at Glanrheidol, Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire (ff. 31 verso-50), compiled 1856-1858, by James Hughes, Glanrheidol, and an amanuensis, with additions in pencil in Hughes' hand regarding the relocation of some of the paintings within the house. The books, mostly on the subjects of biography, English literature, history, law, religion, science, topography and travel, were mainly published in London during the late eighteenth century and first half of the nineteeth century; very few are in Welsh or about Wales. The library and works of art were transferred after Hughes's death to Llidiardau, Llanilar, the home of his daughter Elizabeth, wife of George Williams Parry (1811-74), Llidiardau, and an inventory in her hand of the books, jewellery, paintings, etc., brought there in 1861 is tipped in on f. 51; a supplementary catalogue in her hand of books at Llidiardau, 1866, is added on ff. 1 verso-3, 4, 5. A memorandum, 1874, in her hand in pencil recording the loan of a book occurs on f. 48 verso. The volume was previously used, [c. 1820], for a catalogue of the contents of an unnamed library (ff. 3 verso, 4 verso, 5 verso-30 verso). These books, arranged under broad subject headings and mostly on agriculture and horticulture, biography, history, law, literature, religion, science and travel, were mainly published during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; a small number are in Welsh or about Wales. A few memoranda in pencil, [c. 1820], record loans of books to individuals (ff. 1, 6, 9).

Hughes, James, 1788-1858.
