Sefydlwyd yr Uned Dramor mewn cyfarfod yn swyddfeydd yr Academi ar 22 Tachwedd 1985. Bwriad y cyfarfod oedd cael pobl oedd yn cynrychioli llenorion a chyrff noddi i drafod sut y gellid creu gwell cysylltiadau rhwng llenorion Cymru a llenorion gwledydd eraill. Fe arweiniodd hyn at gynnal cynhadledd 'Moseic y Cenhedloedd' ym 1987.
