History

Dr Jacques Wirz (b. 1926), teacher and writer, of Therwil, near Basel, Switzerland, first came to know Raymond Garlick while Wirz was a student at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, in 1947. Their friendship continued for a number of years by mail and through Wirz's visits to Wales during the 1950s. They lost contact after 1957 but the friendship was resumed in 1985, with subsequent meetings in Wales and Switzerland. Wirz's friend, Daisy Reck (b. 1937), journalist, of Basel, accompanied him on several trips to Wales and later wrote several travel articles on Wales for Swiss newspapers.
