Roedd y Parch. John Williams (1826-1898), Aberystwyth, yn fab i John Williams, masnachwr, a'i wraig Mary (1795-1875). Daeth yn ddirwestwr mawr a sefydlodd 'Band of Hope' yng Nghapel y Tabernacl, Aberystwyth, ym 1852. Daeth yn flaenor yn y capel hwnnw ym 1860 a chafodd ei ordeinio yn weinidog ym 1868. Roedd yn flaenllaw mewn amryw o weithgareddau yn Aberystwyth. Roedd gan John Williams ddwy ferch, yr Athro Mary Williams (?1882-1977) a Jane (neu Jennie) Williams (yn ddiweddarach Ruggles-Gates) (m. 1971), ac un mab, John. Bu farw ar 31 Rhagfyr 1898.
