Biographical history

The Rev. William Roberts (1830-1886) was a minister and evangelist. He was a schoolmaster at Tywyn, Abergele, Denbighshire, 1855-1859, and minister of Mynydd Seion Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Abergele, 1861-1880, and also undertook preaching tours. He wrote poetry and essays for entry in eisteddfod competitions and also adjudicated in eisteddfodau. He had a number of descendants who were clergy or nonconformist ministers. These include the Rev. Charles Williams (fl. 1874-[c. 1916]), Prestatyn, and the Rev. Edward Thomas, Diserth, Flintshire, his sons-in-law; and his sons the Rev. John Bevan Roberts (fl. [1886]-[1940s]), rector of Martindale, Cumberland, and the Rev. Robert Darbyshire Roberts. His grandson was the Rev. Canon William Prys James Darbyshire-Robert (1912-1980), vicar of Colwyn, Clwyd, who was also descended from Robert John Pryse (Gweirydd ap Rhys, 1807-1889).
