Notes and accounts of 'Eben Fardd', etc.

A composite volume in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') containing (?)essays or addresses (prefaced 'Sketches & Stories') on 'Nodweddiad Cenedlaethol', 'Darllenyddiaeth', etc., with a 'Hir a Thoddaid' beginning 'Wyneb y Genedl o hen Baganiaeth', (?) an adjudication on 'Darlleniaeth', with verses entitled 'Darlleniaeth yr Ysgrythyr', a translation into English by Bl. ab C. of six lines from Eben Fardd's 'Dinystr Jerusalem', a notebook bearing on the cover the words 'Dechreu yr ysgol yn yr Eglwys', containing memoranda, accounts, etc., 1824-9, relating mainly to Clynnog school, 1827-8 (names of scholars), with some earlier references to Llangybi and Llanarmon, a list of poems by Goronwy Owen with the year of their composition, and a copy of the protest presented to Lord Mostyn following the awarding of the chair prize at the Rhuddlan Eisteddfod, 1850, for a 'pryddest' instead of an 'awdl', with a copy of Lord Mostyn's reply.

'Ode To Charity' [etc.],

'Ode to Charity', a translation into English [by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd')] of the 'awdl' on the subject 'Elusengarwch' by David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion'). The translator's name is not given but a note at the top of the first page reads 'Rec'd a Sovereign from J. Maughan Esqr. for Translating this'. There are some notes and emendations in pencil in another hand. On the last page, following the translation, are thirty-eight lines of an elegy in Welsh, (?) incomplete, on the death of [Frederick, Duke of York]. Pasted in at the beginning is a press cutting headed 'Darlith i'r Saeson. Araeth Mr Lloyd George. Bywyd a Barddoniaeth Cymru' giving an account of an address Lloyd George gave as chairman of a concert at Llanystumdwy.

Notes re Beddgelert and district,

An exercise book containing material [?collected by D. E. Jenkins for his book Bedd Gelert, its Facts, Fairies, and Folk-Lore (Portmadoc, 1899)], including extracts from the vestry book of the parish of Beddgelert [co. Caernarvon], 1804-1884, from [William] Williams: Observations on the Snowdon Mountains . . . (1802), and from [E. L. Barnwell:] 'Beudy Newydd, Nantmor [co. Caernarvon], Roman halting-place', Arch[aeologia] Camb[rensis], 1878; notes on an ancient Roman fort found near the pass of Aberglaslyn; a transcript of the words of the song 'Bugeiles y Wyddfa' [by John Jones ('Eos Bradwen')], with an English translation; and an English version, under the title 'The Shepherd of Cwm Dyli and his sweetheart', [of the Reverend Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd')'s poem 'Rhiangerdd Bugail Cwmdyli']. Also included is an extract from, or a transcript of, a letter from the Reverend W. J. Dawson to James Bowden, London, [18]99 (informing recipient that D. E. Jenkins wished to approach him with regard to publishing his book on Beddgelert, a comment on the work).

Memoranda and accounts of 'Eben Fardd', etc.

A composite volume in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') containing a summary of the main events of his life, 1802-58, notes concerning Goronwy Owen, David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri') and David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion'), various accounts and memoranda, partly in pencil, including the following: 'Sepr 17 1844 Received from Mr Hugh Humphreys 144 copies (Printed) of my 'Harvest Hymns' 2/6. Distributed as follows ...', and 'Dr. Burton's Theory of the Millenium', lines entitled 'Contemplation on a River's Bank (From Eben Fardd)' by 'Bl. ab C.....n [i.e. a translation of 'Myfyrdod ar lan afon'], notes of an address or sermon in Welsh on education, and notes on the Hebrew alphabet, etc.

Poetry,

Two sets of transcripts of Welsh poems - 'Ffordd Gofidiau' and 'Dioddefaint Crist', with English counterpart, to be set to music for chorus and solo voices by Thomas Edwards. There are marginal notes by Thomas Edwards, and he has dated 'Ffordd Gofidiau' 25 January 1895.

A book containing a draft of 'Jesus: An Heroic Poem by Golyddan, translated from the Welsh by the author', 1862; and a short biography of Golyddan written in 1868 for Enwogion Cymru by his father, Robert John Pryse (Gweirydd ap Rhys).

Gwaith 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'

A collection by W. J. Roberts of the poetical works of Evan Evans (Ieuan Glan Geirionydd) entitled 'Gemau Glan Geirionydd' (changed to 'Y Geirionydd'; c.f. the printed edition Geirionydd as edited by W. J. Roberts). A table of the poems gives the date of composition of the principal items. The book was later used by W. J. Roberts to record his own compositions: an ode, with translation, being an address of welcome to Earl Carrington and family to Gwydir, 1896; 'Hir a Thoddeidiau' - 'Talhaiarn', 'marwolaeth Eben Fardd', 'Llywyddion Eisteddfod Caernarfon', 1862, 'Y Cae Gwenith', 'Ŷf-golofn Conway Rowley'; 'caneuon' - 'Pont Dolgarrog', 'Caneuon Serch', 'Days Gone by', 'Verses dedicated to --- Miss', 'Gwywiad fy Rhosyn', and 'One Pound and one shilling'; and 'englynion' - 'I'r Mochyn', 'I David Williams ('Alaw Goch')', 'Rhyl fel Ymdrochle', and 'I Weinidog yr Efengyl'.

Hughes, Oakley Lodge, Gloucestershire, and translations by Amédé Louis Joseph Guidez; 'englynion' by [Daniel Evans] 'Daniel Ddu [o Geredigion]' and [John Jones] 'Ioan Tegid', 1828, and English translations and imitations of poetry of 'Ioan Tegid' by T. S. A. and T. J., 1832-6; and an extract from Francois René, vicomte de Chateaubriand: Les Martyrs, ou Le Triomphe de la Religion Chrétienne, together with a corresponding Latin translation by M. Guidez. Although the fly-leaf bears the name of Alcwyn C. Evans, Carmarthen none of the text is in his hand.
