History

The Liberal Party was founded in 1859, covering England, Wales and Scotland. The Welsh Liberal Party (WLP) became a separate political party in 1966, although it remained closely linked with the Liberal Party. In 1988, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Party was formed when the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party merged, and the Welsh Liberal Party ceased to exist. The Welsh Liberal Party inherited a structure of county or constituency associations of members; as a national body it had a General Council and Executive Committee, and organised an annual conference.
