Archival history

The manuscript bears several instances of the name of a subsequent owner, Daniel Evans, weaver, of Tir Ifan Ddu, Llanfynydd, son of Evan John and half-brother of 'Tomos Glyn Cothi'. The autograph of Thomas Evans, Tir Evan, in the volume probably refers to 'Tomos Glyn Cothi'.

Scope and content

A notebook containing memoranda and accounts of Evan John, farmer and weaver, of Gwernogau, Llanfihangel Rhos-y-corn, Carmarthenshire, and father of Thomas Evans ('Tomos Glyn Cothi'; 1764-1833), from 1769 to 1780, with later entries for 1788. The volume mainly contains weaving patterns, entries of hiring agreements by his children as farm-servants (e.g. Thomas Evans at Salach and Pantybetws, Llanfihangel Rhos-y-corn, etc., 1775-6), and particulars of the purchase of barley, oatmeal, peeled corn, and timber, and of the sale of butter, beeswax, honey, hides, and tallow. The volume also includes a stanza of a hymn in a later hand.
