Co-operative Society (Western Section) Annual Returns,

Annual returns, 1937-1967, sent by local Co-operative Societies in South Wales and the border counties (Western Section) to the movement's headquarters, Co-operative Union Ltd, Manchester. The returns give details of land owned by each local society, profits made, the numbers of employees and members, particulars of trading, investments, liabilities and assets, and commercial operations undertaken during the course of the year. In several cases copies of annual Reports and Balance Sheets and other papers are appended to the returns. The returns were accompanied by a box list which has been used as the basis for the present list.

Records of Messrs David and David, comprising records of valuations of properties in South Wales and the adjoining counties of England made during the period 1846-1933, including Breconshire, 1872-1912; Carmarthenshire, 1865-1884; Glamorgan, 1846-1926; Monmouthshire, 1867-1933; Gloucestershire, 1875-1880; Herefordshire, 1874-1881; and Somerset, 1876-1885. The records include surveys, reports, valuations, correspondence, notes, plans, valuation schedules, sale notices and copy agreements. Many of the records reflect the industrial and urban development of South Wales and quite a number of the individual valuations are of land subject to compulsory purchase by railway companies and public utilities.

Miscellaneous observations on: (a) Agricultural Societies; (b) Weights and Measures, being notes compiled by Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain), for Chapter XVII of his General View of the Agriculture and Domestic Economy of South Wales. At the foot of p. 1 Iolo Morganwg has written 'Glam. Agl Society, a lazy sleepy Humdrum lubbard, that does nothing at all to any valuable purpose'.

Melus geingciau Deheubarth Cymru

A volume of melodies, [c. 1815], being the original of 'Melus Geingciau [sic] Deheubarth Cymru or The Melodies of South Wales' (f. 1), containing some fifty-six tunes collected by Ifor Ceri [?and others], some with words.
The volume consists of twenty-seven tunes, numbered 1-27, in the hand of Ifor Ceri, thirteen with Welsh lyrics appended (ff. 2 verso-27 verso); a further twenty-nine unnumbered tunes (including duplicates of a few already in the volume) in the hand of Ifor Ceri (ff. 18, 19-20, 21, 22 verso-23, 25, 26, 27, 28-33 verso); and thirteen tunes inserted in spaces by a different hand (ff. 2, 3 verso-5, 8-10, 11 verso-12, 13, 15-17, 24).

Commercial Department,

Administrative files created and kept by the Commercial Department of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The department dealt mainly with commercial aspects of coal mining, which included the maintenance and use of railway wagons for coal transport, the negotiation of special railway rates and dock charges for the transport and shipping of coal, the negotiation with foreign countries for the exchange of Welsh coals for pitwood during wartime, the loading of coal and provision of special machinery at docks, compliance with government legislation on the health and safety of miners, negotiations with miners' groups on wages and holidays, and representation in the Mining Association of Great Britain.

Wales District Congress

The group contains papers relating to the Communist Party of Great Britain Wales District Congress, from the first in 1945 to the last in 1991; including printed congress reports, resolutions and amendments, speeches, notes by Bert Pearce and related documents. The amount of material available for the period before Bert Pearce was Welsh Secretary (pre-1960) is sparse. From 1960 the Congress was held biennially, with some exceptions.
