Administrative history
The Wales Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign / Ymgyrch Gefnogi Nicaragua Cymru was established in 1986 to support the Nicaraguan Revolution and the Sandinistas, who overthrew the dictator Somoza in 1979. The Campaign has forged links between trade unions, community groups, churches and educational organisations in Wales and in Nicaragua, providing both political solidarity through campaigning and lobbying activities, and practical support through fund-raising for projects. Since about 1994 Wales NSC has developed a special link with the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, focusing on the common struggles over language and for self-determination. Wales NSC organises regular delegations to Nicaragua. The Campaign also believes it has a wider responsibility for promoting and sustaining the tradition of internationalism in Wales, and has supported the establishment of a number of networks for international groups in Wales. Wales NSC is a membership organisation which produces a regular newsletter, as well as distributing material from its sister organisation, NSC. The Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign itself was founded in 1978 a year before the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship. The NSC is a political and human rights organisation which works in partnership with progressive organisations in Nicaragua and the UK to promote the values of the Sandinista Revolution which they see as social and economic justice and popular participation. The NSC carries out campaigning and lobbying work in the UK and the development of political and economic solidarity at all levels between the UK and Nicaragua.
