History

The main Gwydir estate did not become part of Wynnstay, but descended to the Dukes of Ancaster through the marriage of Mary, daughter of Sir Richard Wynn (d. 1674), to Robert Bertie, Lord Willoughby of Eresby, Duke of Ancaster. However, early rentals for the Gwydir estate do exist among the Wynnstay estate records from 1671 and 1680. Some of the properties were purchased by Sir John Wynn, 1680/1, from Sir Richard Wynn’s daughter and thus passed into the possession of Wynnstay. The Glasinfryn estate of Richard Gwynne was incorporated into the Gwydir rentals from 1683 onwards.
