Administrative history
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) was created in 1981 as a breakaway group from the Labour Party by people who felt that the Labour Party had moved too far left. It positioned itself as a centre left party, and formed an Alliance with the Liberal Party. In 1988, the two parties merged and founded the Social and Liberal Democrat Party (SLD), later the Liberal Democrats. The party was composed of local branches, of which Vale of Glamorgan SDP was one, reporting to SDP Council for Wales and the national headquarters in London. The Vale of Glamorgan branch was formed of local groups, including the Barry, Dinas Powys, and Penarth Groups.
