Administrative history
The Senate was established at the same time as the University in 1893. All Senate members were members of the academic staff of the University. It was responsible for preparing reports for, and recommending new developments to, the University court on any matters relating to degree and diploma examinations; for making recommendations relating to Fellowships, scholarships and University prizes. Final decisions on such matters, however, were taken by the Court and were administered by the Registrar. The Senate was abolished in 1920 with University reorganisation following the Haldane Commission and most of its functions were transferred to the newly established Academic Board.
